Engineering and ProjectsLean Six Sigma in Power Industry – Rajeev Kamboj
Rajeev Kamboj started his six sigma journey in the year 2005 with Green Belt, and then he undertook Black Belt. He works in the power industry where the business is made to order type and there is no mass production. The process improvement for their company started when the company initiated working on lean solutions. He feels there are 2-3 major benefits of it for process improvement. He says with the usage of lean solutions they generated the business which was 1.5 times the existing one without any additional resources.
The industry he is working in is inventory specific. The lead time for the machines is high. At the start of 2000 it was 155 days, now after implementation of lean methodology it has reduced by 50-55%. He narrates his experience of implementing lean methodology where the benefit was customer satisfaction. The project was related to delivery of product to the customer where the company was incurring loss of 9.5 lakhs per year due to late deliveries. After implementation of lean methodology, the losses due to late deliveries were reduced to mere Rs.20,000 over a growing business of 70 crores. He feels lean tools bring in visibility in the overall process improvement. In his organization, when they implemented kaizen approach they could literally pull out 5 truckloads of waste which is unimaginable. He feels in any industry; the product moves faster than the information. And he feels that it is evident in the case of “The Dabbawalas of Mumbai”. He feels it is important for the product and information to move together.
Later on they implemented transportation approach through lean solutions, everything on wheel, basic lean production system, reduction of batch size, and so on. Now currently they are working on information flow. They are working on kaizen approach to office space using value stream mapping. On the signing off note he says that Benchmark is holding a good hand, professional in their approach for the training. Just hold their hand and they will take you through.
