Background

Innovation is rewarded, but the execution is worshipped.

The ultimate goal for any business is to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Many companies craft good strategies, but few execute them well. The main challenge is getting everyone aligned and working on what matters most.

Hoshin Kanri approach aims to ensure that insight and vision are not forgotten and ignored as soon as planning activities are over. It aims to guarantee that planning documents, once finalized, are kept alive and acted on daily, and not shelved as soon as they have been completed. It aims to prevent the daily quota of fire-fighting, unplanned ‘strategic’ meetings, and quarterly bottom-line pressures taking precedence over the really strategic plans.

    FAQ

    Most frequent questions and answers

Q1: How is this course different from Hoshin Kanri information available on the Internet?
This course is designed to start where most ‘Hoshin presentations’ found on the internet finish.

While you can readily find a good deal of information on hoshin and how it works, the content is generally heavy on theory, history and background with limited insight into how you actually implement it within organizations.  As an example, the term ‘catchball’ describes formal discussions to drive alignment, which is easier said than done, yet there is little to no information on how to effectively conduct it.

This course takes you through a practical guide of how to implement Hoshin Kanri with specific tools and checklists developed over years of experience that are not found in books or the internet.
Q2: Will I really be able to lead my team through Hoshin Kanri after taking this course?
Yes. If you have leadership support and the platform to influence leaders within your organization – this course is designed for you.

This course will give you the practical tools and approaches to facilitate your team through each of the phases of Hoshin Kanri – planning, deployment,  execution, and review.  It will go beyond the theory and show you how to truly drive focus and alignment within your team.
Moreover, you will get access to pre-designed templates, tools and checklists so you do not have to re-invent the wheel.  While each implementation is unique in its own way, you will have a ‘head start’ and know what to do if you encounter challenges in implementation.
Q3: I am a Senior Leader/ Executive who wants to learn more about Hoshin. Is this course right for me?
Yes – this course is especially for you!

A Hoshin implementation will never succeed without executive buy-in and support.  It is imperative you accelerate through the change curve of unaware, aware, understanding, believe, and act.  There is no single ‘lean practitioner’ or ‘hoshin expert’ who can replace what you bring to the organization when it comes to how the business should be run.  Your knowledge and understanding is crucial to success and this cannot be delegated.

The ideal formula would be for you to attend with your ‘chief facilitator / change agent’ or most senior ‘lean leader / professional’ who can make Hoshin Kanri a reality within your team.
Q4: My company is struggling in a changing marketplace. Can Hoshin Kanri help us stay relevant?
The ultimate goal for each company is to build a sustainable competitive advantage.  In most cases, ‘how you will get there is clearly articulated through a company vision. But in reality – what most teams lack is an effective process to drive progress and action at every level to get them there.

Every organization faces the same challenge of not having infinite time, energy, and resources to do everything.  It is critical they focus on the vital few versus trivial many programs and initiatives to achieve their long-term business goals and objectives.

Hoshin Kanri is more powerful than other approaches to strategy execution because it provides a clear, visible cascade of long-term goals linked to short-term targets. More importantly, it makes the necessary distinction of work that drives ‘breakthrough’ (gets you closer to your vision) versus ‘business fundamentals’ (supports your mission)
Q5: I want to learn more about implementing Hoshin. How do i know this is the right institution for me?

There are many organizations that focus consulting efforts on building operational excellence and continuous improvement practices within a company.  Indeed, there are several institutions that have the necessary knowledge, experience, and capability to help you on your journey and should be explored.  If you would like our opinion on the matter, feel free to drop us an email.

Q6: I am an seasoned Lean Six Sigma / Operational Excellence / Continuous Improvement professional. Should I still take this course?
If you have several years’ experience leading Hoshin Kanri, this course will most certainly provide you with insights on how to improve your deployment.

If you have spent most of your career leading or coaching teams and individuals in process-related improvements and efficiencies, this course will give you broader ‘business improvement’ strategies to help bring more value to your organization by enabling you to make a bigger impact.

As most ‘process professionals’ grow in their careers, it becomes more important to ensure improvements are targeted to the ‘heart of the organization’  This is where Hoshin Kanri comes into play and serves as the next step in your career development.
