Lean Six Sigma in Quality/QA Services

Quality management is a recent phenomenon. The idea of quality started with volume production. This related to mass production of the same kind of material without differences. Later, the focus shifted to industrial efficiency. The addition of statistical quality control brought in analysis methods aimed at reducing variation and defects.

In the recent times, quality management concepts and techniques are considered a necessity for everyone in the organization. In many organizations, it is considered better for every function/unit to improve its own quality instead of relying on a central function of quality assurance which is now supposed to have a facilitation role

  • Case Study Description

    One of the global top three manufacturers of fluorescent lamps found that the number of rejects due to cap defects in tube lights was high. This was primarily due to contamination of cap with cement. Though cap contamination is a visual defect and does not affect the performance of the product, it was found that customers were not willing to buy such a product and this was also affecting the brand image of the company. A six sigma project was taken up with a lofty goal of drastic reduction in this long standing visual defect. After a series of parametric and non parametric analysis followed by experimentation, the project was successfully completed. The cap contamination cases were brought down by more than 50%
