Excellence : Excellence is defined as the quality of being extremely good So what is Personal excellence? In simple words, setting up the bar higher [benchmark] in whatever activities, the individual(who is compared with the rest) does. Process Excellence: Providing an environment where the processes are highly stable and controlled with a minimal or no variation and with minimum or no wastage(Muda). Focus is on continuous improvement to ensure processes are highly stablized Operational Excellence: It reflects the way how as a person, unit, you or your team/organisation excel at parameters such as Cost, Human Resources, scope, time, quality etc.,. By excelling at this, the provider of a service, can provide value to the customer with optimal/maximum efficiency. Business Excellence: It is through which you make your business, with effective strategies ,efficient business plans , best business practices so that optimal results are achieved at a sustained rate. How each one is related to the other one(s): Personal Excellence is directly tied to Process Excellence. If and only if the individual is interested to adhere to the processes laid out, then process excellence or for that matter any other activity can be successful . If the cultural shift/mindset is not there amongst the individual/team , then no change would work. This can be represented by the formula : Quality of the solution (Q) * Acceptance of the solution (A) = Effectiveness of the solution (E). Unless there is an acceptance to any thing (which is the human part) nothing can be done. So if the individual has the desire to excel at his/her work, then he/she would strive to make sure he/she/the organization achieve Process Excellence. Process Excellence provides a way for continuous improvement. Purpose of process excellence is to streamline all the processes , make them stable and in the process to achieve minimal degree of variation and minimal wastage. By having a process excellence system in place, grey areas in Operational excellence and Business excellence can be identified and improved/rectified upon. Practically it is difficult to achieve excellence in one when another one is absent. For instance, Business and Operational excellence would require process improvements. If streamlining does not happen there then there is no excellence in Business and in Operational aspects as well.Similarly without human intervention or the elevated mindset of the individual, it becomes difficult to successfully run the processes at a top-notch. From an organisation perspective, the organisation should Provide a conducive environment to work with wherein by individuals can be encouraged to share their ideas/thoughts and create a transparency, making them feel belonging to the organisational/unit's problems/constraints (Personal Excellence) Encourage individuals to showcase their creativity in designing/providing solutions to problems (Personal Excellence) Create Challenging contests and rewarding people on various categories such as best creativity,best solution, optimal solution,... (Personal Excellence) Setup process standards and metrics for each parameter(Define the expectation).Set the Upper & Lower limit & also customer specification limits (Process Excellence) Conduct awareness sessions on process expectations with reasoning and justifications. Provide details with SMART goals (Process Excellence) Ensure that individuals/teams adhere to the standards with constant monitoring through Audits/Inspections/reviews. (Process Excellence) Look out for scope for continuous improvements periodically and accordingly adjust the process baseline if required. Personal Excellence: - Is a state of an individual or any person in which the individual or a person inherits an excellent or highest level of ability to be fully aware and to be fully able to rightly work upon one’s own strengths and weaknesses. This is a state that a person or an individual has reached upon experiencing the higher degree of self-evaluation & at which the person or an individual can guide other person or persons to make them be able to reach the state of excellence. Process Excellence:- Is a control of any process in order to be able to course with higher degree of efficiency & effectiveness. This is a state at which the process could deliver exactly the right required output. Operational Excellence:- Is a state of operations in which the operations are running exactly as per the expectations of the Business by having the excellent processes in place with excellent team working on Operations Business Excellence:- Is a state in which the Business has reached to a level where it becomes remarkably successful in achieving the set vision and by fulfilling all the expectations from the trail of the business in parallel. This is the state in which a business itself becomes the way of life. Business Excellence is more of a macro level where it is very important that it surpasses the states of Personal Excellence, Process Excellence & Operational Excellence. It is not so easy to achieve the Business Excellence unless an individual, process & operations are contributing towards the whole of the agenda. My simple take in this is that the relationship described in this is reversely related i.e. Business Excellence cannot happen without Operational Excellence which cannot be achieved with no Process Excellence which in turn cannot be conceived without Personal Excellence. In other words, excellence of a business is directly interlinked to the personal excellence quotient of its founders, core members and its employees. A sense of desire to achieve self excellence in individuals leads to defining excellent process in an organization which leads to operational excellence within business units which ultimately leads to the company or the business a whole to excel.4 points

Let’s define personal excellence since the rest is defined by the companies. A combination of personal values, skill (both hard & soft), communication, interpersonal relations and abilities to judge, discriminate and make a decision falls under the personal excellence. But when should one use what quality is up to the individual’s wisdom? Personal, Process, operational and business excellence are indeed related. A group of personal excellence leads to process excellence. A combination of personal and process excellence leads to operational excellence which eventually leads to business excellence. The ultimate goal is to excel in business. However, Personal, process or operational can be substituted or interchanged to meet the ultimate goal. A process that is immaculately planned and successfully implemented can be an alternative for personal excellence, indicating a successful operation. Having said this, the organizations should focus on Personal and operational excellence. A combination of people and processes -leads to business excellence. 100% people oriented or 100% process oriented is not a healthy ambiance. Two decades back, when people had personal values and aligned themselves towards the business goals – people oriented companies were successful. personal excellence for me is striving to achieve perfection with self awareness of one's own strengths and weaknesses and also an endeavour to be the best in everything one does by putting in 100% effort. process excellence is ensuring mistake proofing or a zero error approach in an end to end flow of a particular process.A process is termed as excellent if a mediocre user or a user prone to makinng errors is able to get the same output or outcome without any or with minimum variations everytime this process is used. operational excellence can be defined as perfection or finesse in achieving goal of the operation or mission by means of achieving perfection in meeting customer's expectation and satisfaction by enhancing individual employees' outputs by encouraging team work,keeping the employee's morale and motivation high and making continous improvement in processes. Business excellence can be defined as achieving higher level and consistency of performance in the operations of an organisation..it is achieving perfection in achieving the goals of the organisation by increasing overall efficiency of the operation by minimising waste in production of goods and services and increasing loyalty of employees.It is constant evaluation of policies and Standard operating procedures in order to identify areas which have scope of improvement. How would you define, compare and contrast the following terms - Personal Excellence, Process Excellence, Operational Excellence and Business Excellence? Excellence is defined as "The quality of being outstanding or extremely good." To Compare the 4 basic levels of excellence in performance of tasks/work , we must first Define teh same. Personal Excellence: it is the effort or quest or will to become the best possible expression of who we are on a core or on the qualities that will help us to achieve the near or far goals that we set for ourselves. Pushing oneself that extra bit towards achieving improvement in our own individualities and aptitudes though practices and training will help us to attain personal excellence- The process cannot be timebound though as personal excellence can be sought in various spheres and the goal can be ever incrementing – the process needs to begin with Belief in self and the inner will to go beyond the comfort zones and always “sharpen your tools” to build upon skills to reach closer to goals that need to be a little stretched , over a period of time – higher goals than what is evidently near. It is very important to be connected and around or with people who are the best in the sphere that matches or seconds one’s objectives - This will bring in positivity and the fuel & mileage to attain personal Excellence. Personal Excellence is not tangible definitely and is associated with the results in tasks/ work. Process Excellence is about process effectiveness and efficiency. It requires processes to be designed and improved for consistent delivery with minimum variation and minimum waste. Notwithstanding that it is the domain of Six Sigma and Lean, Process Excellence creates a framework for continuous improvement in performance of task/ work. It sets benchmarks and standards and helps us to deliver tangible results in tasks/ work and translates our vision and strategies into tangible matrix on which further “excellence” can be derived. Operational Excellence: Though Process Excellence and Operational Excellence is deemed the same by many, in practicality, operational excellence is broader . It builds on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organisation’s culture (and with it HR) in its domain. Operations is basically the action/ work that is done regularly as design to produce the deliverables of a process. The excellence in operations is attained when a regular task by design is completed within the allocated time with allocated resources within defined specifications of produce. Business Excellence: This is the broadest concept - It encompasses the whole organization, including strategy, communication with all stakeholders, and – critically – the organization’s Mission, vision and “scorecard”. Many would want to consider it as the integrated collection of all the above mentioned levels of excellence to attain closest to 100% satisfaction for all stakeholders .An organization can have excellent processes and products but if its strategy is wrong or if its results are poor, it still has a long way to go to achieve Business Excellence. Business excellence can be measured though multiple Scorecards covering all segments of business. From the above we can ascertain that Business Excellence is the Journey while Personal, Process and Operational excellence are the stepping stones for the same. Because our personal version of reality is an accurate reflection of who we are, we know that change begins internally. Process Excellence: Process excellence is about process effectiveness and efficiency. Operational Excellence: Operational Excellence is an element of organizational leadership which uses a variety of principles, systems, and tools toward the sustainable improvement of key performance metrics of an individual and team for a better process outcome. Business Excellence: Business Excellence is described as outstanding practices in managing the organization and achieving results, through a set of fundamental concepts or values. All the terms are related to one another as personal excellence can’t be achieved when the process is not set accordingly in place, and also vice versa, Process excellence can’t be met when the contribution of individuals is not up to the standards set for the process. To achieve Business excellence, certain models are uses, that when applied within an organization can help to focus thought and action in a more systematic and structured way that should lead to increased performance in the organization. These models are holistic in that they focus upon all areas and dimensions of an organization, and in particular, factors that drive performance. To apply these models we will need the help of the Individuals contribution within the processes/departments that are in the system. Operational Excellence for me is a lot more hands on and practical application. Heavy/Manufacturing industry (i.e.: operations in heavy industries) is where I’d expect to find such a term being prevalent. While Process Excellence sounds more analytical, it conjures images of process maps, SOP (Standard Operating Process) and spreadsheets, so at least, I’d consider it more of a service-industry term. Again though, it seems that both industries are using both terms it depends on how the management takes it into place. An organization should actually pursue to achieve Process Excellence through helping individuals achieve Personal Excellence because when these are met automatically Operational and Business excellence will be achieved.1 point

Lean & Six sigma will be the domain knowledge. Personal Excellence: Personal Excellence is defined as building an effective workforce to achieve business excellence. Operational Excellence (Opex): Opex is defined as building an effective and efficient process flow to meet the customer expectations. There has to be a cultural adaptation of aligning the organizational goals, policies, systems and processes among the people of the organization. This will drive behaviors and results in a continuous process improvement strategic plan of Cost, Time & Quality. Personal excellence to me means striving to become simply the best in what you do and achieving a level of mastery or excellence in the areas of life. Process excellence means making the processes so efficient and robust so that there is minimum wastage and minimum variation too. Process excellence ensures that quality products are produced consistenly. While process excellence lays emphasis on processeses in the organzation, the focus of Operational excellence is not a single process but the entire organization. Its more about an environment created in an organization right from an employee to leaders think about ways and means of making the organization more efficient through innovations and improvements. Business excellence encompasses all the 3 elements discussed above: Personal, Process and Operational excellence. Seeking Business excellence would need a continous improvement in its processes, personnel and business and strive to become the best in the industry. As per the discussion above, all these are inter-linked. While a business cant reach a level of excellence until its personnel, processes and the different elements of an organization are in harmony and are constanly improving. An inclination towards personal excellence would always challenge the people to look for smarter and more efficient ways of doing things & thus leading to improvements in processes and eventually process excellence. The Process Management fundamentals (by understanding what customer wants, how to perform the process consistently, workload balance, organize the teams around the process, visual displays of the metrics, look for continuous improvement), Quality framework and Focus on end to end processes are Process excellence. It helps for continuous process improvement by reducing the process variation and by elimination waste. Consistently meeting customer requirement, right first time and zero defects are the three key things. Operational excellence – it’s a broader term of process excellence. Over then the above mentioned process excellence, its about driving the culture across organization. Business excellence – focusing on operations and as well as the business (for both clients and internal). It means the operational excellence and drive innovation. Also it will focus on people development and continuous learning to bring the people as business advisors. Here they will look for client value creation through analytics, leading practices replication and look for business outcomes (which will impact the shareholder/client’s positively). If you ask for the comparison on these four terms – the focus starts from the individual, then process, then organization and the entire business. It strives to achieve continuous flow in a process through the identification and removal of wastes, bottlenecks and constraint shifting. Output of process excellence is cycle and lead time reduction, waste reduction, increased process throughput, profit, employee & customer satisfaction. It is a continuous journey. Operational excellence An operation may consist of several processes or a single process. Operational excellence is similar to process excellence if only a single process is involved in an operation. The term excellence refers to highest level of performance. The terms Process Excellence, Operational Excellence and Business Excellence, all imply team performance. While varied interpretations are possible for the definition and scope of each of these 3 terms, it appears that we have been continuously trying to emphasize totality in the coverage of excellence. Starting with process, it has been re-scoped as Operations, then further re-scoped as Business. Whereas the term 'Personal Excellence' points to an individual performance. While individual excellence could be an important enabler to attain Business Excellence, what is more important is that so long as the personal excellence fosters into team excellence, it is fine. While the pre-requisite of personal excellence may be debatable for attaining Business excellence, the other two factors viz. Process and Operational excellence are certainly a must. Organizations ultimately have to pursue Business Excellence, which will encompass the Process and Operational excellence. The predominant tools and techniques for Business excellence would include Strategic ones related to Business Process Management, whereas for Operations and Process Management, it will be the tactical tools.
