Excellence - quality of being extremely good

Personal Excellence - Continual process of raising the bar higher in whatever activities an individual does

Process Excellence - relates to a process being effective (minimal waste) and efficient (minimal variation) leading to a consistent output. Objective is to make the process - stable (consistent output) and capable (able to meet customer requirements)

Operational Excellence - is the coming together of the various units/teams within a business and executing the business strategy more consistently and reliably than the competition. It reflects the way how a person, process, unit, team, organisation excel at parameters such as Cost, Human Resources, scope, time, quality etc.

Business Excellence - is the adoption of outstanding practices in managing the organisation and achieving results. These include (but not limited to) continuous evaluation of the market and competition, internal policy assessments, being flexible with business strategies and goals (for course correction), building a culture of excellence and adoption of best practices. These practices evolve into business models outlining how world class organizations should operate

My simple take in this is that the relationship described in this is reversely related i.e. Business Excellence cannot happen without Operational Excellence which cannot be achieved with no Process Excellence which in turn cannot be conceived without Personal Excellence. In other words, excellence of a business is directly interlinked to the personal excellence quotient of its founders, core members and its employees. A sense of desire to achieve self excellence in individuals leads to defining excellent process in an organization which leads to operational excellence within business units which ultimately leads to the company or the business a whole to excel.

The term excellence refers to highest level of performance. The terms Process Excellence, Operational Excellence and Business Excellence, all imply team performance. While varied interpretations are possible for the definition and scope of each of these 3 terms, it appears that we have been continuously trying to emphasize totality in the coverage of excellence. Starting with process, it has been re-scoped as Operations, then further re-scoped as Business. Whereas the term 'Personal Excellence' points to an individual performance. While individual excellence could be an important enabler to attain Business Excellence, what is more important is that so long as the personal excellence fosters into team excellence, it is fine.

 

While the pre-requisite of personal excellence may be debatable for attaining Business excellence, the other two factors viz. Process and Operational excellence are certainly a must. Organizations ultimately have to pursue Business Excellence, which will encompass the Process and Operational excellence. The predominant tools and techniques for Business excellence would include Strategic ones related to Business Process Management, whereas for Operations and Process Management, it will be the tactical tools. Approaches relating to Cultural aspects will be important all round for facilitating the awareness, acceptance and involvement of change.

Let’s define personal excellence since the rest is defined by the companies.  A combination of personal values, skill (both hard & soft), communication, interpersonal relations and abilities to judge, discriminate and make a decision falls under the personal excellence. 

But when should one use what quality is up to the individual’s wisdom?

 

Personal, Process, operational and business excellence are indeed related.  A group of personal excellence leads to process excellence.  A combination of personal and process excellence leads to operational excellence which eventually leads to business excellence.

The ultimate goal is to excel in business.  However, Personal, process or operational can be substituted or interchanged to meet the ultimate goal.  A process that is immaculately planned and successfully implemented can be an alternative for personal excellence, indicating a successful operation.

Having said this, the organizations should focus on Personal and operational excellence.

A combination of people and processes -leads to business excellence.  100% people oriented or 100% process oriented is not a healthy ambiance. 

Two decades back, when people had personal values and aligned themselves towards the business goals – people oriented companies were successful.  The decline in values encouraged process implementations.  Hard core process snubs creativity.

 

When  fragmented  a group of Personal excellence eventually leads to business excellence.

Define, Compare and contrast Personal Excellence, Process Excellence, Operational Excellence & Business Excellence.

 

  1. Personal Excellence: - Is a state of an individual or any person in which the individual or a person inherits an excellent or highest level of ability to be fully aware and to be fully able to rightly work upon one’s own strengths and weaknesses. This is a state that a person or an individual has reached upon experiencing the higher degree of self-evaluation & at which the person or an individual can guide other person or persons to make them be able to reach the state of excellence.
  2.  Process Excellence:- Is a control of any process in order to be able to course with higher degree of efficiency & effectiveness. This is a state at which the process could deliver exactly the right required output.
  3.  Operational Excellence:- Is a state of operations in which the operations are running exactly as per the expectations of the Business by having the excellent processes in place with excellent team working on Operations
  4.  Business Excellence:- Is a state in which the Business has reached to a level where it becomes remarkably successful in achieving the set vision and by fulfilling all the expectations from the trail of  the business in parallel. This is the state in which a business itself becomes the way of life.  

  

Business Excellence is more of a macro level where it is very important that it surpasses the states of Personal Excellence, Process Excellence & Operational Excellence. It is not so easy to achieve the Business Excellence unless an individual, process & operations are contributing towards the whole of the agenda.

 

Personal Excellence is more of a micro level & is very important as without this it is very hard to achieve any further steps/state of excellence either in Process, Operations or in Business.

 

Process excellence is directly contributing to Operations & further to Business to achieve higher degree of excellence. Operation Excellence follows Personal & Process excellence.

 

It is highly impossible to achieve Business excellence state without being excellent as a person or an individual contributing to the Business, without having an excellent process & operations.

 

Business excellence is the final result of Personal, Process & Operational excellence.

 

An Organization must make sure that it empowers every individual to be able to involve to the fullest extent possible. It is an individual who can actual make a big difference in the whole of the Business. According to me it is finally the individual who can design & lead the right process, who can identify the right tools and techniques in order to perform to a level of excellence.

Finally it is an individual who can bring the business as the way of life as the life in the business is finally the individual itself, despite the business is fully correlated to customer or market in its business sense.

 Basically the common factor is to focus & achieve small small improvements to achieve a success.
 

Individual excellence can be explained as improvement  in the performance standard, related to a good quality talent.

 

A process excellence (PEx) can  be an improvement that reduces variation & minimises /eliminate non value adding activities to achieve a consistent process output.
 

Operational excellence (OPEx) could be more of a culture/ a habit that optimises different processes people,& resources to achieve a optimal output. A chain of good initiatives.
 Once you achieve a successful OPEx and a overall improvement culture with a consistently delivering growth it can be said as Business Excellence.

Definition:

 

Process Excellence: It is a methodology focusing upon continuous improvement by designing and mapping detailed process steps that helps removing wastes and increases the efficiency.

 

Personal Excellence: It is an ability to enable oneself to create solutions in every possible situation. To enable yourself think sequentially to control and manage yourself in emotional and mental state. This deals with self-confidence, personal goals, vales etc.

 

Operational excellence: In every organization there is a flow of value/services to the customer. Operational excellence is the process of making the flow virtual to every employee so that they can fix if any gap exist before the flow gets breakdown (before reaching to the customer)

 

Business Excellence: It is an overall process of achieving the results by applying outstanding methodologies and frameworks based on fundamental set of values. BE focusses on systematic and fundamental approach in a structured way to increase overall efficiency.

 

Comparison:

 

Process excellence- focusses on a single process at a time

 

Operational excellence: includes Process Excellence plus some focus on support functions like HR and Administration (enabling operations perform at par)

 

Business Excellence- Includes Process Excellence and Operational Excellence focusing on pragmatic and improved results for all the stakeholders in the organization.

 

Personal Excellence: Personal excellence exists in all the above mentioned. It is empowering people to form a Process, Operation and overall Business Excellence.

Personal excellence: Making ourselves competent by bringing out our own capabilities. Striving to become better day by day

Process excellence: Superiority in the execution of processes for consistent delivery with minimum variation and minimum waste.

Personal, process, operational and business excellence are interrelated, these four can be arranged as concentric circles with smaller circle to a subset of larger one in the same order. Making ourselves excellence leads to thinking for process excellence. Improved process supports the peer processes and brings out operational excellence. An organization having excellent processes and products with strategy and communication gives outstanding results leading to Business excellence.

There is no uniformity in the process which is subject to change (if required) on periodic interval basis on the customer demand for continuous improvement. Process Excellence is designed basis on cost, time, company’s goal, system, market conditions, competitors & customer demand.

 

Operational Excellence: Process Excellence will focus only on the related process which vary from each department, unit etc., whereas the Operational Excellence is a broader concept which deals with end to end operational activity and it is combination of various group's, department's & unit's. Process Excellence will be one of key process in overall operational excellence flow chart. Operational Excellence will be effective only with the combination of Personal Excellence & Process Excellence. It is an on-going process and need to focus on each stage of the flow chart for effective improvement.  Process Excellence - This is organized approach to conduct a process which ensures there is efficient and effective conversion of inputs in to customer value

 Operational Excellence - Organized approach to conduct a function which operates in an efficient and effective way to create value for money invested. Focusing on within and across functions operations. This contributes to build culture.

 Business Excellence - Organized approach to enable business to get value for their money. Business and Operations goal being well connected.

 

Relation between all these: Each form a building block to enable the other at next level.

 It may not be easy task to achieve one in the absence of the other. Even if it be achieved, results will not be top class.

 Organization should focus on pursuing personnel excellence and process excellence as their basic need. Once the maturity is gained and this becomes culture, next step would be to build in Operational Excellence, strengthening various functions and ultimately see how all these are contributing to Business Excellence. In case of any gap bridge them and build a world class excellence culture.

 Approaches and techniques would range from basic aspects of Personnel Excellence, like well-organized plan as an individual member of the group. Organized way of managing time, creating goals that aligns with the organizational vision. Strong mechanism to keep check on the progress and make course correction and faster pace.

 For Process Excellence, focus should to be adopt industry practices and make sure they are analyzed and aligned to need to that particular business rather than blind implementation. Make sure people appreciate the fact of how process help build the excellence culture.

 For Operational Excellence, it’s critical to build cross functional collaboration and common goal and vision that aligns to organizational goal. Play with mindset of encouraging each other as function to organize the resources well to become more efficient.

 

For Business Excellence, build a culture where customer becomes partner in excellence journey. Make sure the customer needs are effectively converted in to vision of company and further effectively translate those to next level objectives till the lower most level in the organization.

Process Excellence is improving the process which is value adding to the business, by removing the unnecessary waste in the process, which is not adding value to the process. This is more to bring agility and standardization through customized solution both to internal customers and external customers

Process excellence is a part of Operational excellence. Although the tools, framework may be similar.

Process Excellence methods and tools, including Lean Management, Six Sigma Methodology, are core competencies of Operational Excellence organizations and utilized to achieve the organization's strategic and operational objectives and goals.

PROCESS EXCELLENCE - LEAN MANAGEMENT:

The primary objective of the Lean Management methodology is to continuously reduce the lead time of an organization’s service, manufacturing, and support processes. Process lead time is defined as the average time it takes to complete the entire process - from start to finish - including time waiting between the different processing steps or activities of the process

 

PROCESS EXCELLENCE - SIX SIGMA METHODOLOGY

The primary objective of the Six Sigma methodology is to improve the performance of an organization's manufacturing, service or administrative process by eliminating or at least reducing variation in the outcome of that process. Six Sigma acheive this objective by identifying, quantifying and eliminating the sources of that variation.

Operational excellence is deeper than Process Excellance. It builds on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organization’s culture (and with it HR) in its domain. It requires the organization to ensure staff understands how the organization works as a value creation system, and to have structures and empowerment that enable people to fix problems when necessary

Business Excellence is broader still. It holds the whole organization, including strategy, communication with all stakeholders, and – critically – the organization’s results. An organization can have excellent processes and products but if its strategy is wrong or if its results are poor, it still has a long way to go to achieve Business Excellence

The word excellence is derived from the Latin word excellere (which translates to Surpass) so when we talk about excellence it can be defined as the condition or state which surpasses the expectations and delights the user who is constantly on the lookout for improvement.

Terms - Personal excellence, process excellence, operational excellence, and business excellence are interrelated and it is not possible to achieve one in the absence of another.

 

Being a strong believer of taking one step at a time, would like to summarize the way excellence can be achieved in any discipline (personal/process/operational/business)

  1. Self-examination and the desire to be better and raising the bar from the current scenario – winning the mind of self and other leaders
  2. Selecting right goals and their duration: short, medium, and long - ownership
  3. Evaluating strengths and weakness – key performance results
  4. Placing entire focus on areas that need to be improved: what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, by when it needs to be done – strategy
  5. Identifying solutions/improvement plans, verifying whether the solutions/plans will bring about benefits (top line/bottom line) and implementing the improvement plan, reviewing with stakeholder, gather feedback and review.

The above 1-5 steps need to be constantly worked upon to remain relevant and create value.

Answer 1:
Personal Excellence is the ability to create solutions in difficult solutions to enable yourself to successfully overcome the problems. This means “self-management”.

Process Excellence is improving the way businesses create and deliver value to customer.

Operational Excellence is an element of organizational intelligence that focuses on meeting customer expectations while stressing the application of a number of principles, processes and tools towards sustainable improvement

Business Excellence is using exceptional practices for managing the organization and achieving the desired results, all being based on fundamental concepts or values.

Personal Excellence is managing self and striving to overcome difficulties individually. 
Process Excellence results in effective and efficient process as a result of personal excellence. It helps improve Operational Excellence of the organization by focusing on developing and delivering consistently near-perfect products, processes and services.
Operational Excellence is process excellence with additional focus on cultural and systemic improvements.
Business Excellence is the most broader of all since it is for the entire organization, .i.e. the entire organization having best processes delivering outstanding results for all.

Hence Personal Excellence is a subset of Process Excellence which in turn is a subset of Operational Excellence which finally is a subset of Business Excellence. 
 

To define the above I will start with defining Business Excellence: Business excellence is often described as outstanding practices in managing the organization and achieving results, all based on a set of fundamental concepts or values. These practices have evolved into models for how a world class organization should operate studying each other's operational styles. The most common model include;

  • Baldrige (MBNQA)- used in over 25 countries including US and NZ
  • European Foundation for Quality Management- Used throughout Europe
  • Japan Quality Award Model-used in Japan
  • Singapore Quality Award Model- Singapore

The most popular and influential model used in the western world is Malcolm Baldrige Award Model which consists of practices that are incorporated into six approach categories:

  • Leadership
  • Strategic Planning
  • customer and market focus
  • Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management
  • workforce focus
  • Process management
  • Business results

The model revolves around values like Visionary leadership where there is organizational and higher leadership commitment for achieving excellence, Customer driven Excellence where goals of the organization are made to satisfy ever changing customer demands, Organization and Personal learning to include People and its operations towards excellence, Valuing employees and Partners to have everlasting engagement for excellence, Focus on the future, Managing Innovation, Management by Fact, Social Responsibility, Focus on Results and Create Value and Systems perspective throughout.

Now to define operational excellence the philosophy of the workplace is built around problem solving, team work and leadership results in the ongoing improvements of the Organization. the process involves focusing on the customer needs, keeping the employees positive and empowered and continually improving the current activities in the workplace. Several tools like applying Lean Six Sigma, TOC are used.

Process excellence is about process effectiveness and efficiency of the operations handled by an organization. It requires processes to be designed and improved for consistent delivery with minimum variation (applying six sigma) and minimum waste (applying Lean). This will strengthen to meet the objectives of operational and business excellence.

Personal excellence is being the excellent personal assets for the organization in which the people continuously evolving themselves with agility to bring about continual improvements in the processes they are involved helping meet the organizational goals.

In nutshell  the relationship is as below

Personal Excellence leads to ---> Process Excellence leads to ---> Operational Excellence leads to ---> Business Excellence

Business Excellence drives ------>Operational Excellence drives ------>Process Excellence  drives ------>Personal Excellence

Personal Excellence

Personal Excellence is the excellence which a person continuously strive to achieve in his / her emotional, physical, mental and spiritual realms. It involves factors like commitment and adherence to  discipline, will, habit transformation through daily routine and rituals, meditation, self-awareness,, mindfulness , self –control, self-improvement. Personal excellence is the root. Success of individual in his personal and professional realms seems in direct proportion to the level of personal excellence that he/she has achieved. It is a continuous journey.

 

Process Excellence

Process Excellence is related to excellence in a specific process. It strives to achieve continuous flow in a process through the identification and removal of wastes, bottlenecks and constraint shifting. Output of process excellence is cycle and lead time reduction, waste reduction, increased process throughput, profit, employee & customer satisfaction. It is a continuous journey.

 

Operational excellence

An operation may consist of several processes or a single process. Operational excellence is similar to process excellence if only a single process is involved in an operation. However. if multiple processes are involved, then operational excellence will comprise of excellence in individual processes involved in the operation.

 

Business excellence

A business may comprise of several operations. Business excellence is similar to operational excellence if only a single operation is involved in a business. However. if multiple operations are involved, then business excellence will comprise of excellence in individual operations involved in the business. Output of business excellence is maximization of effectiveness of business in meeting or exceeding customer value expectations and using continuous improvement to drive business results.

All of the above mentioned are strongly related to each other . All of them are continuous. Wherever people are involved, all excellence starts from personal excellence which in turns positively drive process excellence. Process excellence in turn drives operational excellence which in turn drives business excellence.

Aim of all improvements projects should be business excellence !!!

Business Excellence can be achieved with Process and Operation Excellence.

Personal Excellence is foundation/drive for any Excellence initiative and thought process.

Excellence is the highest peak that a person, a process, an operation or a business can attain. The latter cannot exist without the former. Any process improvement techniques (like lean) apply to all four just that the context changes. e.g. Lean philosophy is designed to eliminate wastes
Lean philosophy adopted personally, changes ones thought process, who applies to a process to eliminate non value adding activities, which in turns increases operational efficiency by reduced costs  resulting in exceeding business objectives based on the Balanced score card

 

Excellence according to dictionary meaning implies quality of being outstanding or being extremely good.  Process excellence as understood implies surpassing both in efficiency and effectiveness and it requires process to be designed to deliver consistent quality with minimum variation and waste, while operational excellence includes process excellence plus attention to culture, System thinking attention to HR, while Business Excellence implies evolving successful strategy to excel in business and the common denominator for all the above excellence is Personal excellence.  To sum up the following is the equation.

Process Excellence= Personal Excellence+ Improving Efficiency and Effectiveness

Operational excellence= Process Excellence+ Attention to culture, HR etc

Business excellence= Process Excellence+ Operational Excellence+ Evolving successful strategy for business

The common denominator in all the above excellence is Personal excellence.  To me Personal excellence encompasses the ability to regulate mind without being slaves to ones wishes, learn basic skills and apply to maintain good health which includes correct method of brushing teeth, art of mastering to take right food at right quantity and time, art of having quality sleep, have good discipline to use time productively, communicate correctly under all circumstances without any raise in voice i.e being responsive than being reactive.  To quote Lalaji “A cultured tongue rules kingdom of heart”. Learning techniques to evolve one’s consciousness. Personal excellence just not confined to excelling in body and mind but it also involves evolution of soul, to quote Rev. Kamleshji Patel “With a pure conscience, even a rabbit acts like a lion and with a compromised conscience (impurity-filled conscience) even a lion will behave like a rabbit

Personal Excellence, Process Excellence, Operational Excellence and Business Excellence

First let me define the answer for each phrase separately.

 

Personal Excellence: Is to give the best result without any error as compared to the previous assigned task.

Process excellence It is make sure the assigned team ot the team which we handle deliver the work with error free and within the given TAT.


Operational Excellence Giving the best to the customer as per the SLA, with quality in place and also with in the TAT. Reviewing the reports frequently with graph increase in performance.


Business Excellence It is giving the best in the organisation with satisfaction result at all levels in the organisation.

In an organisation all this are interlinked. Starting from the responsibility for each team member roles and responsibility with the end the result with error free and within the given turn around time. This results in the SLA of the process and also the organisation.
