Why DPMO is calculating in Millions?? Why not in Billion??
Hi Junaid Feel free to convert DPMO to DPBO (Defects Per Billion Opportunities) if you feel like. DPMO is only a unit of measurement and hence can be changed if required. Having said that, I guess a more practical question could be why did someone come up with per million and not billion. In my opinion, it is based on the highest magnitude imaginable at the time of inception. Six Sigma got started in 1980s at Motorola and maybe they could imagine million opportunities better than billion opportunities

Value Stream Mapping Questions On Usage in Service
1. Soft skills and good professional relations can help you get the data. 2. This is how I would do it - I would model the longest branch as the main branch, however I will still capture the other various paths as well 3. Rework can be easily depicted using the rework symbol in a VSM. You will have to mention the % of rework Apart from the above, the following should help you reduce the time for launching a new product a. Change Management principles b. Identify the handoff points among the 12 departments. Most of the delays happen at handoffs. Analyze them and reduce them

Justify Converting a “Non-Scheduled Process” to be a “Scheduled Process”
Hello Andrew You may present your case basis the transaction error % (effectiveness or accuracy ratio). Alternatively, you may also simply look at the number of transaction errors on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. This should be done only if the total number of transactions are fixed. if the total transactions vary, then looking at standalone numbers might be mis-leading.

Difference Between Pareto Chart & Pie Chart
Hello Keerthi Both Pareto and Pie chart (in fact all graphs) are only data visualization tools. Having said that, each chart has a specific purpose Pareto chart - shows the rank order in the data (by sorting the data in descending order) Pie chart - shows the data as 'part of the whole pie' (data may not be sorted in descending order) Pareto's 80/20 rule is a prioritization rule and you may apply it to a pie chart as well (for that matter you may apply it to a bar chart as well). Another reason why a Pareto might be preferred is if there are too many slices. Pie chart may look very cumbersome.

Six Sigma - Project Selection Matrix
Hello Kishan Some guidelines 1. Objective is to improve the process timelines - Lean 2. Objective is to reduce the number of defects or improve quality - Six Sigma 3. Project is best suited for Lean Six Sigma approach if the cause and solution are unknown. If any or both of these are known, it is suitable for Kaizen 4. Relatively smaller improvements - Kaizen Apply the above filters and then use a project selection criteria to select one project from the many potential projects.
