A focus group discussion is gathering people from similar backgrounds together to talk about a specific topic. It is a qualitative exploration where participants are asked questions about their perceptions, thoughts, opinions and ideas related to the specific topic. It comprises of 5 to 10 people. The group size varies depending upon the complexity of the topic. FGD is led by a facilitator who will introduce the topics for the discussion and encourages the group to participate in the discussion.
But, there are some challenges in doing effective an FGD such as homogeneity of the group, dealing with dominant and disruptive people, avoiding group-thinking, time constraints, availability of the participants, facilitator bias, analyzing and reporting the results of the focus group.
Despite the challenges, FGD is used in DMAIC projects to scope the project by gathering insights from stakeholders, to capture the customer requirements which helps to define the project goals, to identify and prioritize data sources which helps to focus on the most critical data for measurement, to analyze the root cause of an issue by engaging the team in a discussion, used to generate ideas for process improvement, also helps in developing control plans by engaging the stakeholders for defining monitoring and control measures for sustaining improvements.
