  1. Percentile is a metric that provides insight about where a value lies within a data set by revealing the percentage of data points below or equal to a specific value. This process involves dividing the dataset into a hundred equal segments based on the distribution of the data, with each segment representing a percentage of the total data. It displays position or rank in a data set. The difference between percentage and percentile is in their purposes. A Percentage is a numerical representation out of 100, and a percentile is the percentage of values below a specific value. Percentage is used for comparing quantities whereas, a percentile is used to display position or rank. In statistics and process improvements, percentiles are used for understanding data distribution, including measures like median, quartiles and identifying outliers. Percentiles are used to set performance targets and to define SLAs, also to set quality standards in manufacturing industries, used to track process performance, identify any trends, and to identify any inefficiencies in the process that needs improvement, also used for resource allocation and capacity planning by analyzing the higher percentiles, used to enhance customer experiences in service domain by monitoring the percentiles that shows long wait times and allocating resources to address the issues.
  2. A focus group discussion is gathering people from similar backgrounds together to talk about a specific topic. It is a qualitative exploration where participants are asked questions about their perceptions, thoughts, opinions and ideas related to the specific topic. It comprises of 5 to 10 people. The group size varies depending upon the complexity of the topic. FGD is led by a facilitator who will introduce the topics for the discussion and encourages the group to participate in the discussion. But, there are some challenges in doing effective an FGD such as homogeneity of the group, dealing with dominant and disruptive people, avoiding group-thinking, time constraints, availability of the participants, facilitator bias, analyzing and reporting the results of the focus group. Despite the challenges, FGD is used in DMAIC projects to scope the project by gathering insights from stakeholders, to capture the customer requirements which helps to define the project goals, to identify and prioritize data sources which helps to focus on the most critical data for measurement, to analyze the root cause of an issue by engaging the team in a discussion, used to generate ideas for process improvement, also helps in developing control plans by engaging the stakeholders for defining monitoring and control measures for sustaining improvements.
