Excellence - quality of being extremely good

Personal Excellence - Continual process of raising the bar higher in whatever activities an individual does

Process Excellence - relates to a process being effective (minimal waste) and efficient (minimal variation) leading to a consistent output. Objective is to make the process - stable (consistent output) and capable (able to meet customer requirements)

Operational Excellence - is the coming together of the various units/teams within a business and executing the business strategy more consistently and reliably than the competition. It reflects the way how a person, process, unit, team, organisation excel at parameters such as Cost, Human Resources, scope, time, quality etc.

Business Excellence - is the adoption of outstanding practices in managing the organisation and achieving results. These include (but not limited to) continuous evaluation of the market and competition, internal policy assessments, being flexible with business strategies and goals (for course correction), building a culture of excellence and adoption of best practices. These practices evolve into business models outlining how world class organizations should operate

Business excellence is achieved through operational excellence of business aligned processes in combination with personal excellence. Process excellence can be achived through simplified processes which can deliver business values as quickly as it can. Operational exellence is end to end process excellence which can produce error free, defect free, waste free business values in most simplified way .

Personal Excellence: Its a basically discover your core values and passion towards the development. For that we need understand our own Strength and weakness. Raising the bar towards the Improvement and development

 

Process Excellence: its a basically designed a process with minimum variation and waste. Its more analytical, making process maps and process flow. It always have scope to improve.

 

Operational Excellence: Its a basically a continuous Improvement methodology with Lean and six sigma. Its focus on meeting Customer expectation and sustainable improvement in KEY Performance metrics

 

Business Excellence: Its focus on systematic and structured way to increase performance up to world class standard. Its help to set fundamental concept or value of Organization. its a combination of Personal , Process and Operational excellence.

Personal excellence – becoming best in their own performance. They will always benchmark and contest with their own performance.

Process excellence – is for the process. The Process Management fundamentals (by understanding what customer wants, how to perform the process consistently, workload balance, organize the teams around the process, visual displays of the metrics, look for continuous improvement), Quality framework and Focus on end to end processes are Process excellence. It helps for continuous process improvement by reducing the process variation and by elimination waste. Consistently meeting customer requirement, right first time and zero defects are the three key things.

Operational excellence – it’s a broader term of process excellence. Over then the above mentioned process excellence, its about driving the culture across organization.

Business excellence – focusing on operations and as well as the business (for both clients and internal). It means the operational excellence and drive innovation. Also it will focus on people development and continuous learning to bring the people as business advisors. Here they will look for client value creation through analytics, leading practices replication and look for business outcomes (which will impact the shareholder/client’s positively).

 If you ask for the comparison on these four terms – the focus starts from the individual, then process, then organization and the entire business. All these are very important for any organizational growth.

Our goals and objectives in life is ingrained to exhibit excellence and we strive hard to achieve that in life. Excellence is like an umbrella that covers me and my belongings from the shower of flaws

 

  This phenomenon of excellence begins with "me". So, achieving personal excellence is living a conscious life by identifying, leveraging and furnishing my skill sets to achieve my goals in life.

 

The most important part of achieving personal excellence is how effectively I perform my task. So, process excellence is intertwined with my effectiveness and efficiency that minimises waste and avoids rework, saving time and resources. Now the next step is to gauge if what I am doing is in right direction or no. So, achieving operational excellence is to achieve the targeted metrics and quantify the efforts to ensure if it is made in right direction. And finally the ensemble of perfection (ideally) of all the people and process is the business excellence.

 

Now let's put it in business perspective and understand its relation. The phenomenon starts with recruitment wherein a candidate's life anchors should be aligned to organization objective. In other words, he/she should be culturally fit in organization. If personal excellence is achieved by that person, he/she could exhibit and perform to carry process excellence. This will help in achieving business metrics like customer retention & acquisition, cost saving, revenue generation and minimization of waste. And ultimately all this will culminate to achieve business excellence.

In short, all the above-mentioned terms are interlinked with each other and it is difficult to achieve business goals if any one of it is eliminated.

 

So, what are the approaches to achieve this:

In order to streamline all the mentioned terms, it should be followed on by one having quality assurance at every stage

  1. Personal Excellence: It is the amalgamation of innate qualities and surrounding that we live in. So, the basic idea is to have that learning approach throughout to furnish the skills. Most importantly, from business perspective one has to be accommodative and ready to take ownership of task to fit into any organization. Besides, one should have faith in self, get out of one's comfort zone, be decisive and be constant learner to excel personally
  2. Process Excellence: Many companies strive to be process centric rather than people centric. It is all about improving the way businesses create and deliver value to the customers. We have plenty of tools to streamline the process to minimum waste and rework. Besides these tools, active  participation from employees  is also of prime importance. Leveraging tools and People Management can be useful to achieve this excellence
  3. Operational Excellence: The ultimate aim of the company is to maximize profits. It is more broader and strategic aspect that strives to achieve sustainability .However, the objective and goal of the company should be in unison with all the employees to achieve operational excellence. This involves proper assignment of responsibilities, clear goal setting  and effective communication among all the employees.
  4. Business Excellence: I am sure if the above terms are streamlined and exhibited well then half the work is done to achieve business excellence. For that  every aspect of business leadership, strategy, customer focus, information management, people and process should be meticulously looked upon considering business goals.

To sum up, there is a high dependency of each of these terms on one another. However, each of them should be streamlines separately one by one to get on the ladder of business success.

Personal Excellence:
Personal excellence is a skill of life which begins inside us and leads us to better motives, values and standards.
Its not about being perfect, rather it deals about being the best possible human being. Its about learning to be honest with ourselves and growing on it.
 
Process Excellence:
Process excellence is a way to improve a specific business process on miniscule level to get the correct, desired & optimum output. It may require to remove or reduce different variables like reducing wastage of resources, removal of bottlenecks if any.
Operational Excellence:
Operational excellence is a collective term for a number of process excellence. In other words, Process excellence at various level leads to operational excellence at one level.
The major focus is to meet customer expectations while operating the excellence model at the various levels of process excellence.
Business Excellence:
Business excellence again is a collective output received after implementation of various process & operational excellence, which leads to better business prospects and growth of the business at various levels.

Why do some people pursue excellence? 
Vince Lombardi suggests, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” In “3 Idiots” Aamir Khan very rightly said “seek excellence, success will follow”!!!

 

Personal Excellence:
Personal excellence is not about being a perfectionist but rather it is about pushing yourself hard in order to surpass people’s expectations and to excel in everything that you do. People who believe in personal excellence always compete against themselves and their own performance last time. 

 

In pursuit of personal excellence, there are some timeless steps in ensuing of any individual own growth which are given below and hope will be useful to all of us:

Process Excellence, Operational Excellence and Business Excellence

 

Process excellence is about process effectiveness and efficiency. It requires processes to be designed and improved for consistent delivery with minimum variation and minimum waste. Process excellence is about so much more than process improvement techniques. It's about learning to solve problems and manage change, performance, and workplace culture to align with overall business strategies.

Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs once argued diversity of experience and insight is critical. "Without enough dots to connect," he said, you "end up with very linear solutions. The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have."

We think the same is true about the challenges facing organizations today. The more dots we have to connect – whether they be technological trends or information about different disciplines – the more likely we will be able to come up with an unusual or unexpected solution to a business challenge.

 

Operational excellence is broader than process excellence. However for some, process excellence is also operational excellence. It builds on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organisation’s culture (and with it HR) in its domain. 
 

Infact in the PDCA cycle, Operational Excellence covers DCA, while P is the typical strategy part. Irrespective of the size of the business or the industry it belongs to, OE is mission critical. The best way going ahead is to be operationally fit all the time.


Business Excellence is broader still. It encompasses the whole organization, including strategy, communication with all stakeholders, and – critically – the organization’s results. An organization can have excellent processes and products but if its strategy is wrong or if its results are poor, it still has a long way to go to achieve Business Excellence.

In my view Personal Excellence is having the right competencies for doing the job. Process Excellence is meeting or overachieving the key performance indicators in a sustainable way and meeting the expectations of the Operations.    

Operational Excellence is overall meeting the world class standard operations compared to your competitors with high productivity and quality and having a good work life balance.

Business Excellence is Provide a world class standard product/Service to customers at a good quality. 

 

Business Excellence is the key in setting up the expectations for Operations, Process and People. There should be a clear vision on what the business has to achieve. 

 

Business Strategy should go down and it is very important for operations to link their strategy with business and process to link t with operations. These strategies will decide what kind of skill set is needed for the organisation. Important to motivate people and provide opportunities to develop the right skill set and it becomes the personal excellence for people. 

Personal Excellence:- As the name suggest it refers to personal, increasing his/her efficiency, effectiveness.

Process excellence:- this deals with increasing efficiency/effectiveness of a particular process. A process has achieved excellence when it is able to give consistent right quality output.

Operational excellence:- this deals with increasing efficiency in complete operation, it includes process excellence, but some other factors such as service departments also play a big role in achieving operational excellence.

Business excellence:- Business excellence includes Operational excellence along with Companies policies, their strategies toward environment/society. What is their perception about their competitors/customers. An Organization can achieve business excellence only if their strategies are correct.

Analogy:- Comparing with Human Health

Business Excellence:- Our goal is to keep oneself healty/fit.

Operational excellence:- there are many operations done in our body, like breathing, blood circulation, digestion, etc. taking an example of blood circulation. If operation of circulating blood to and fro from heart is performing correctly it is considered operational excellence.

Process excellence:- process done by heart of pumping blood to varies arteries. If this process is working efficiently it has achieved process excellence

Personal excellence:-the amount of RBC, WBC, plate lattes etc, is as per required quantity. And formation of new blood is done as per requirement it can be considered personal excellence.

Now, keeping in mind above example.

We can achieve personal excellence, but it does not mean we can achieve process excellence. There can be some reasons that heart does not pump enough blood continuously. (process).

If both our personal and process are efficient that does not mean our operation has achieved operational excellence. Operation includes end to end processes; if heart is pumping (process)  efficiently, there can be some reasons that it is not reaching the some parts of body. Our process has is perfect, but our operation is not correct.

Now comes the big part business excellence. As a human we can have different thinking/ethics/strategies, someone smokes, someone has bad food habits. Because of that our arteries can block. In this case all the three personal, process and operational excellence can be achieved, but because of our strategies/thinking our business as a whole (keeping oneself healthy) is not met.:unsure:

Personal Excellence – The innate ability to reflect on his/her core strength / weakness and challenge the status quo.  And take appropriate action steps to continuously raise the bar and set them a new standard.

 

Process Excellence – The effectiveness and efficiency of a process, which is designed to produce optimal results with minimal variation, reduce waste and increase revenue. An organization that practices

Process Excellence uses Six Sigma, Lean methodologies to the core to retain the existing client base.

 

Operational Excellence – This is one step ahead of Process Excellence approach and would envision end-to-end aspects of an organizational need. Such organization uses various methodologies to lead organization toward strategic and breakthrough operational objectives.

 

Business Excellence – Organization with focused thought that set’s action in a more systematic approach with the implementation of international standards and frameworks.  Such organization will easily win hearts of existing clients and generate new businesses.

 

In my view any organization which pursues Personal and Business excellence has the edge over other organization. Individuals characterized with the personal excellence will have ownership and burning desire towards continuous improvement. When industry specific standards and frameworks implemented in an organization with personal excellence will definitely set standards for others.

These terms and related technique or methodologies are both all-related, but somewhere they differ in approach and so, not related also. And, that depends on which perspective, we want to take it forward. But, per instructions, we're focusing on related stuff in this reply.


First of all, these are elements of the same excellence pyramid, flowing from top to bottom where Operational Excellence can be considered at the top of it and Personal Excellence at the bottom conceptualizing in the mind an Organizational Structure and Management systems implemented within. This is like a Broad Level Work-Breakdown Structure which is based on activities to be done on each level supported by defined Processes, Data and Metrics, and Improvement techniques. Because, real time data capturing and relevant metrics only lead to the excellence, after finding out the actual GAP areas and by working on it.


That means, the base methodology is same at each level (i.e. Define Requirement and Workflows, Capture/ Measure data from all sources, Analyze for the insight of GAP areas, Work on Requirements/ Workflows etc. for improvements and Keep a Control Mechanism for expected results every-time the system is run) but the INPUT and OUTPUT differs.

In my opinion Process Excellence, Operational Excellence & Business Excellence are all correlated but in a hierarchy form.

Organizations to achieve the objective of meeting customer expectation, create effective business strategy, keep external stakeholders happy need to have a strong Operational Excellence. Why Operational Excellence because until and unless the organization is not culturally strong, people centric, have intellectual systems, it will not be possible to collaborate to meet the business objective and the acumen to reach Business Excellence. To an extent Operational Excellence cannot be the only driving force until & unless Process Excellence infuses standard processes there by allowing people to deliver consistently positive outcomes with minimal variations and wastes.

In-order that the right processes are created or to create a responsible but carefree culture allowing employees to collaborate and work together in achieving business goals, Personal Excellence plays a pivotal role. Until and unless we keep challenging our minds in bettering ourselves, gain knowledge, become and expert, master a trait we will not be able to move from Ape Age to what we are/ want to be. We will not be able to create standardized process or achieve Process/ Operational/ Business Excellence.

Personal excellence- It means striving hard to become the best possible expression of who we are on a core level. To chalk out the improvements to be made in our lives.

 

Process excellence- It is about process effectiveness and efficiency.

 

Operational excellence- It is about being excellent in day to day functions by doing continuous improvements.

 

Business excellence- Business Excellence is often described as outstanding practices in managing the organisation and achieving results, all based on a set of fundamental concepts or values.

 

All four terms are totally different as personal excellence is for oneself, process excellence is for processes in our organization, operational excellence is for excellence in the day to day functions or routine functions and business excellence is at a higher level for achieving its vision, mission and goal.

Personal excellence to me means striving to become simply the best in what you do and achieving a level of mastery or excellence in the areas of life.

Process excellence means making the processes so efficient and robust so that there is minimum wastage and minimum variation too. Process excellence ensures that quality products are produced consistenly.

While process excellence lays emphasis on processeses in the organzation, the focus of Operational excellence is not a single process but the entire organization. Its more about an environment created in an organization right from an employee to leaders think about ways and means of making the organization more efficient through innovations and improvements.

Business excellence encompasses all the 3 elements discussed above: Personal, Process and Operational excellence. Seeking Business excellence would need a continous improvement in its processes, personnel and business and strive to become the best in the industry.

 

As per the discussion above, all these are inter-linked. While a business cant reach a level of excellence until its personnel, processes and the different elements of an organization are in harmony and are constanly improving. An inclination towards personal excellence would always challenge the people to look for smarter and more efficient ways of doing things & thus leading to improvements in processes and eventually process excellence. Once your personnel and processes are in order, operational excellence is not far to achieve. And once the organization is doing good in all the above aspects, you have seeked Business Excellence and become the benchmark in the industry.

Personal excellence: This is a personal trait. It may be God-given or achieved through rigor of practice and experience. We often hear of people who have excelled in one area or another. For e.g. Sachin Tendulkar, Lata Mangeshkar etc. This kind of excellence is inherent, not everyone can achieve this. However at a personal level, it also means ‘doing the best I can’ which means putting that extra bit of effort and not being satisfied with mediocrity. It also means becoming more competent tomorrow than I am today

 

Process excellence: This involves putting less emphasis on the individual and allowing the process to take over. This can be observed in all kinds of industries, both traditional and modern. Even supposedly creative activities like R&D and innovation are channeled into a process framework so that the gains obtained are sustained. Continuous improvement led by small changes cause the performance of the organization to continuously improve. Learning and feedback loops help to keep the processes relevant. Operational excellence: This is very common in traditional industries where the process of manufacture or service provision has been perfected through years of research and repeated execution with little variation. The workers only need to follow the instructions. Typically such organizations can achieve good performance with even moderately skilled workforce. for e.g. dabbawalas of Mumbai. The main difference with respect to process excellence is the response to change. An organization might operationally excel in one service but a foray into another service could be chaotic. Comparatively, a process excellent company would handle change also methodically.

 

Business excellence: Here the focus is on outcomes, not on inputs or processes. Makes most sense in a competitive world where return on capital has to be justified to stakeholders. In such a company, process or operational excellence would not be an end in itself, rather they would be constantly subjected to the touchstone of RoI and cost benefit analysis. Methods like Six Sigma focus on business excellence and even traditional process improvement models like CMMI have begun to incorporate business goals into their process areas. Having said this, only a company with a solid base of process and operational excellence can have continued business excellence.

Process excellence - is all abt driving process efficiency n effectiveness ensuring consistent improvement in process  performance with minimum variation n waste.

 

Operational excellence - its all about meeting customer expectation through sustainable  improvement n meeting the set process performance metrics led by oeganisational intelligence n leadership skill

 

Business excellence - its about managing the  organisation and achieving result with set fundamental rules and values

 

 

Business Excellence:

Best practices which will help to manage an organisation and to achieve the desired results. The practices should be derived from the policies which are customer focused and results oriented. This can be divided into multiple operational excellence goals department wise.


Operational Excellence:

Methodologies of the work floor to improve the organisation. These also focus on customer needs by keeping the employees as skilled, empowered and as continually improving in all the key performing areas.


Process Excellence:

It is an integral part of Operational excellence. This will stabilise and move towards excellence process wise to reach the goal of operational floor.


Personal Excellence:
Personal excellence is also an integral part of Operational excellence. This will enhance every employees skill set to match the process, organisational and business requirements individual skill set.


Personal and Process excellence lead to Operational excellence which will in turn ensures the successful achievement of business goal with Business excellence.
 

The 4 terms more or less falls under a hierarchy as Business Excellence being the topmost, then Operational Excellence, Process Excellence and finally Personal Excellence.

Personal Excellence forms the basic building block of this entire hierarchy. By equipping oneself with tools and methodologies such as lean, six sigma and other analytical approaches, a person moves toward excellence by taking conscious and data-driven decisions in challenging business situations.

While process excellence aims to improve the individual processes, operational excellence at a broader level encompasses all the processes and drives the organization towards its goals with required systems and processes in place. It also demands the employees understand the organizational goals and work towards them.

Business Excellence, the highest of all four, includes the involvement and interfacing with other stakeholders and outside environment. It brings in the agility and efficiency in responding to the external challenges.

Personal Excellence is all about the excellency in our own life. It helps us to achieve more meaningful life in terms of making balance in our relationship, emotional intelligence, our professional career and to make our life more productive.

 

Process Excellence is a continuous improvement process to increase productivity and quality and at the same time to reduce cost with minimum variation. It is all about effectiveness and efficiency of a process.

 

Operational Excellence is something within the organization where all the activities follow some define process flow. It helps to control disrupt in operation or process due to any changes in some interlinked department or process. It ensures that employees of the organization understand the work flow and help to create the culture to practice the standard operational procedure (SOP) and the organization values. Here the focus is customer. So we can say end to end process for better customer satisfaction with low cost.

 

Business Excellence is something where we consider the organization as a whole, consider all the stakeholders and it helps to achieve business goal of the organization. It starts with business strategy, communication between different stakeholders and departments, then to have define process flow, cascading it in the ground and then internalization and ope-rationalization of the strategy. A organization can have very effective and efficient process and operation but poor communication, weak strategy, loophole in the change management system will not help to achieve business goal and hence to achieve Business Excellence.

Definition-

Personal excellence – (Strive to perform better then past time, every time) Personal excellence comes with experience to execute a particular process with minimum variation in execution, and results obtained are accurate and repeatable keeping the remaining process variables constant. As excellence is a comparative term, one should strive to perform better than what he/she does last time. It’s a continuous process of improvement. Whenever we start executing a new task, we may observe some variation that might not be there in subsequent execution. It’s purely individual perception to perform best every time, by working on self-motivation or for achieving the set goal and moreover when we work on the environment of excellence that created by us (as a continuous effort to perform best), always help in organization to achieve the process and operational excellence. 

However many times it is observed that organizations do huge investment in taking the personal excellence of their employees from one level to next level, sometimes they succeed as well, as this attribute depends upon individual and their will to learn new things. We want to make a point here that there are people who are good in learning new things and thinking innovatively, at the same time there are people who are good at execution, they execute same thing every time without much variation. And organization needs both of these kind of people, but ratio matters. And many times organizations struggle to maintain that, and they have people to design the process but they do not have somebody who can execute the same and that leads to failure. So, personal excellence is very important for any organization, and not only in one domain but also in all the functions to execute the process in the same way with minimal variation.

Process Excellence (effective, efficient processes) - Process excellence is capability of any process to produce the desired outcome consistently with minimum variation within set criteria. It is the domain of Six Sigma and Lean.

Operational excellence :( process excellence plus some attention to HR, culture and systems thinking)- It builds on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organization's culture (and with it HR) in its domain. when personal excellence and process excellence are achieved and company is able to achieve the set targets with minimum variation in desired outcome in batch to batch manufacturing and day to day operations, that leads to operational excellence , operational excellence can be achieved by company or a team within a company .

Businesses excellence ( the pragmatic pursuit and delivery of outstanding results for all stakeholders)- It encompasses the whole organization, including strategy, communication with all stakeholders, and – critically – the organization’s results. Business excellence is nothing but the Seamless execution of formulated Business strategy, which is capable of meeting the requirement of all stakeholders such as customers.

Discussion- In order to achieve the operational excellence, it is of utmost importance to achieve process excellence, and process excellence can be achieved by using different quality tools such as TQM, SIX SIGMA, however in order to use these tools effectively and understand the actual problem and there is need to achieve personal excellence . In many cases it happens that process is well set , but problem is with execution . There lacks the efficiency of identifying the problem effectively and  many times it happens that solution proposed doesn’t gel with the problem and disaster happens. Thus we strongly believe that there needs some degree of personal excellence is required to execute the process effectively.

Well, we also have opinion that if personal excellence is in place and process has a gap, then also desired outcome can be obtained, but certainly to achieve operational excellence, it is must to achieve process excellence.

On several occasions, it is noted that poor business strategy executed effectively has also led to excellence. Here we want to make a point that business excellence can only be achieved or said to be achieved if all its stakeholders are satisfied, which is certainly a tough job  , here personal excellence plays very important role. Which is to handle the situation effectively which may be business related or process related or any other created issues?
