  1. Quite insightful. Interesting to note how retail gaints have been using Six sigma and value chains.
  2. What is Lean? Well, lean is all about elimination of waste. general statistics say, around 90% of the work that we do is waste. Only 10% of the work is actually value adding and for which the customer is willing to pay. It is lean, through which we find ways of eliminating this unwanted activity. Though 100% elimination may not be possible in most cases, it will definitely improve our processes.
  3. yes, there is a huge scope for six sigma project in this industry.. Do a process map and understand what causes displeasure to the customer.. and then focus on them..
  4. I guess it is, 6. All - A, B, C, D, E and F.. assuming that these are the only reasons for an action to happen...
  5. generally, Voice of customer and Quality function deployment tools (house of quality , pugh matrix ) can help in market research...
  6. I would think of using Lean Six Sigma in M&A situation as below, 1) identifying areas of duplication, non value added process because of M&A, 2) as this is the time to revisit your processes, make use of it to benchmark it with the industry best standards / deploy a six sigma project here.
  7. Interesting question.. !! I am still trying to understand how can "length of runway used" be considered a CTQ ? am I correct ? pls correct me if I am wrong.. really looking forward to understand the correct answer.. upon reading, Mr.Sagar's reason is also making sense to me..
  8. Thats a great news... happy to learn from and contribute to such high profile forums...
  9. yes.. I can only agree more .. This forum has answers to all the queries which I had related to six sigma... forum is quite active..
  10. This is an optical illusion... the 2 triangles under discussion (Red and Yellow) are not similar... Let us see how they are non-similar: red triangle: width 8, height 3 yellow triangle: width 5, height 2 for these 2 to be similar, their lengths should be proportional. 8/5 is not equal to 3/2... Hence we see this optical illusion and we end up looking for a missing tile.
  11. Yes.. I have a strong negative opinion on this.. The companies are just playing on the ignorance of the customers.. which in fact is sad. for a good cause like Organ donation, may be we can implement this.. but there should be a way to make sure that companies don't use it for their own whims and fancies.. In my view, the basic rule should be to have a 'default opt out' ( special permissions need to be in place for 'default opt in' ).. Example.. we get annoyed by the number of marketing calls that we receive just because the mobile service provider has a 'default opt in' for National Calling Registry.. we need to specifically opt out to be a part of 'National do not call registry'..
  12. All of us know Pareto's 80/20 principle.. we have all seen the advantages as well... it makes sense in almost all cases... recently I came across an article which challenges this axiom. http://www.multiface.com/trivial.PDF Whats your view on this alternative view..? have you ever faced a similar situation? share your views!
  13. Very good example... no better way to explain such an important concept... and as rightly pointed by Inderjeet, to gain maximum efficiency, Hard working people, focus on all the 100 and toil over their energy and resources... but, Smart workers, pick the vital few (20%) and gain the trivial many (80%).... this is called smart work...
  14. Yes, Education industry is one which needs the most attention towards six sigma.. There are loads of recurring problems and inefficient processes... It is imperative that these educational institutes initiate this process improvements.. pls read the below post on the same lines.. http://forum.benchmarksixsigma.com/topic/872-six-sigma-in-education-sector/page-2#entry34095
  15. Education sector is one of the most dynamic yet inefficient industries... there is a lot a scope for improvements.. I strongly feel it is high time we initiate a change.. Came across a couple of good white papers about "Six Sigma in Education industry".. Good read.. http://www.xerox.com/downloads/wpaper/x/xgs_white_paper_dkurt.pdf what is your view ??? Is it time we act ? IJEPR006.pdf
  16. I see this in 2 dimensions: Ist Dimension : If the product is need based.. ie, if you need to buy a shirt.. then my earlier formula of Quality wins over Brand. IInd Dimension: If the product is prestige based, ie, if the pride of owning something wins over the need for that product, for example, an SUV car. then, in this case, Brand will have a higher say. but the backbone is ultimate, Quality. Without Quality, customer doesn't respect a brand, but, without a brand, the customer is still ready to buy...
  17. Came across an article about how FMCG giants use Lean and Six Sigma techniques to improve their process efficiency.. Having low "time to market" is a leadership strategy.. this is achieved through Lean Six Sigma initiatives.
  18. Though Motorola initiated the idea of Six Sigma, for their Iridium Satellite phones, they used only for Manufacturing processes. they didnt use it effectively in business ie, services, sales and marketing etc.. hence it is not about who introduces first, it is about who does it effectively...
  19. Every coin has 2 sides... Six Sigma also had had failures.. it is an opportunity for us to learn from other's mistakes. Kindly share your thoughts and key takeaways from such six sigma failures. what went wrong? what not to do? how do we resolve such issues..?
  20. We all agree to the fact that Six Sigma is powerful and it improves the processes drastically. Having agreed its impact, why is six sigma not deployed in most companies that effectively. (I agree that they do implement six sigma., but not very aggressively ) Is it because of its high cost? is it because it takes a lot of time and effort to improve the process? Is it because it has not given actual process improvement? please share your views...
  21. Yes, Inspection is a mostly a non-value added activity... I said 'Mostly' because, there are processes that have zero inspection.. example: McDonalds... and it is a 'Non value added activity' because it does not provide any value to customer. What customer expects is a defect free quality product, and he doesn't mind if you are improving your processes to that level or if you are doing a sequential inspection to deliver a quality defect free product. As it is rightly mentioned, he doesn't want to pay extra for anything that does not add value to him...
  22. Often I get confused between DPMO (Defects per Million Opportunities) and DPPM (Defective Parts Per Million) ... can you pls clarify and explain when to use what...
  23. What does the colour of the six sigma belt signify ? found this picture informative...
