September 10, 200916 yr Dear All, There have been several queries about Six Sigma applications in the field of training. This is of relevance to training organizations and is of relevance to people in training departments or working with training or related administrative roles. Have a look at the following points. 1. In manufacturing, service as well as EPC projects training is closely linked with quality of deliverable and customer satisfaction. When an organization starts identifying Six Sigma projects for business results improvement, training effectiveness is one inevitable focus area. 2. When training effectiveness (as an output variable) becomes a project objective, there are several factors (input variables) that link with it. Recruitment and selection effectiveness Trainer selection and competence Effectivenessof training needs identification Infrastructure quality and availability During and post training assessment effectiveness Content Methodology Medium (classroom, WBT, CBT etc) Planning effectiveness 3. As training effectiveness links with several factors as given above and it is generally unclear which factor has a bigger impact on the objective, (and therefore, a solution cannot be found with JUST brainstorming techniques), it is an ideal candidate for a Six Sigma project. 4. Six Sigma techniques provide the right approach as data driven scientific techniques need to be used to ensure a sustainable improvement. 5. Some companies have been doing projects to relate training hours with employee effectiveness. After all, training cost has to be justified. For example, if a person can learn enough in 20 days of training, 40 days of training expenditure may not be justified. Tests to compare job effectiveness with 20 days vs 40 days of training effort are a useful analysis. 6. One of our participants who has been successful with Six Sigma in HR (and she has always had training as an important focus area) has her interview posted. Click here to view the interview. Do post your queries to discuss more on the subject.
September 10, 200916 yr The concept of six sigma,, can we be very well implemented in the training function. I am sharing my views, since I was a Director of Training till the recent past and moved as Director of Six Sigma. Broadly speaking. once we identify what type of training we want to give ( is it orientation, brand modules, health and safety, skill training, self development, sales and customer handling etc), and who are the participants for the that program and what is their mix. This gives us the scope of the project, to define. We can measure the level of the particpants knowledge thru various tests, their work reports, production and defect, accident reports, in case of service industry (OSAT level, overall satisfaction of customers) etc. Probably in the quality language we can say " current sigma level" By analysing this reports, we can come to the conclusion what is the current level of the participants knowledge, what methodology of training to use to get the best results. Once the above are clear, the process of training can be implemented. Once the training is completed, follow the same procedure as above to find out the level of the participants after training. This gives us the improvement level. Is it to our satisfaction or not, or need to implement any other rules etc. Once we are convinced with their performance, design the control plans. How to retain the improvement made. Either periodic reports, performance reports, incentives, how to keep the staff motivated to deliver, etc. Once we are convinced with their delivery level, then the above process can be taken up with again new batch of people.
September 17, 200916 yr Hi Mr Khatri,I need to know the scope of trainer in skills n processes (service industry). kindly advice.RegardsPreety
September 17, 200916 yr Hi PreetyI am a trainer myself with a knowledge of six sigma working in service industry ( hospitality). If i take an example of hotel, from the time the guest calls to make a room reservation, picked up from the airport, transport to the airport and finally bill settlement and checkout, every step is a process. At every process there requires certain skill sets.Based on above, if the complete cycle of operation is divided into a chain of process, which are linked to each other, and developing skill sets for each process, and train people will certainly work.Furthur step, while doing this you can remove certain processes in the cycle, if they do not add any value to the guest, and delays the process. This is making the process more lean

April 16, 201016 yr Author Dear Ashwini, Some identification ideas - Look for pain areas that have a good relation with key business metrics. For example -Relation with business benefits (like productivity or efficiency enhancement through training)Relation with internal customer impactRelation with external customer impactMore ideas - Good projects may be identified inImprovement in training need identification process,Delivery effectiveness of specific high impact training modulesReducing Turnaround Time of training interventions. In any of these (selection should be on the basis of what makes more business sense), the important starting point may be the metric identification. If you have do not have good metrics in place, you may need to define such measures. Additionally, you may like to use Lean tools. (we do offer Lean Management Certification program with special emphasis on business processes like training) Best Regards, VK

August 10, 201015 yr Dear Sir, I am working with a IT company which deals with online shopping portal. I work here as a trainer profile, wherein my job responsibility is to train sales force, regarding our portal which they need to sell, also I am supposed to motivate people in an organisation, teach them soft skills regarding sales and motivate them. I don't have any certification as a trainer as this is my first time as a trainer profile, before this I was there with the sales organisation but I really love this new job profile as a trainer and want to build my career in this field. I am a MBA with HR & Marketing as my major subject ( Dual Specialization ) Please guide me with some certification course that I need to have as a "certified Trainer" Eagerly waiting for your reply. with regards, Ravindra Singh Raikhola
August 10, 201015 yr Author Dear Ravinder, I am not sure whether you are referring to being a "Six Sigma trainer". If that is the case, you need to move up till the level of MBB moving from Green Belt, Black Belt, Lean and finally MBB doing projects along the way. If your query relates to "training skills", I am not the best person to answer this query. We, at Benchmark Six Sigma do not offer such programs (other than the module in MBB that relates to training and facilitation)Regards, VK
August 11, 201015 yr Thank you very much Sir, for your prompt reply. I just want to know that to be a corporate trainer, specially those deals in soft skills, required this six sigma program, or how this program could be beneficial to them.Regards,Ravindra Singh Raikhola

August 23, 201015 yr Dear RameshPlease be informed that to undergo a Six Sigma training, it is not necessary to have basic knowledge of any quality tools. Infact, the subject is taught from the very basics at a Green Belt level. Six Sigma has different levels, Green Belt being the first one, followed by Black Belt and then Master Black Belt. You can learn the subject starting from a Green Belt and then can graduate to other higher levels like BB and then MBB.and since you have provided your contact details, I will have someone contact you soon and help you with all your other queries.RegardsShradhaBenchmark Six Sigma
October 6, 201015 yr Dear AllAs a lean tools trainer, I like to add some light to this discussion. As Mr VK mentioned, Effectiveness of training and impact of training are the objective of SS in Training. The indicators are : Competency Mapping and Production / Productivity improvement.Through competency mapping, the evaluation is to be objective and not subjective.Impact of training is generally improvement in production and reduction in losses / rejections. If you want more precise, you can impart training function-wise so that after training program, you can see the improvement in that areas. Thus the effectiveness.Regards,k venugopal
