December 28, 20232 yr Focused Group Discussion (FGD) is a qualitative research method and data collection technique in which a selected group of individuals discusses a give topic or an issue with in-depth analysis. FGD is facilitated by a professional moderator. The discussion points and questions are open-ended, with sole aim of stimulating an informal discussion and investigating people's views in more detail than is possible through a survey. An example to FGD is - gathering feedback on new product launch or product repackaging, brand logo design etc. Challenges observed in FGD are: 1. Results might be biased 2. Hard to get honest opinions for sensitive topics 3. No scale of measurement whether the participants are voicing their opinions freely 4. Might not be a true representation of our target group 5. Not ideal for B2B research 6. Costlier than a online survey In DMAIC project - FGD helps us to identify CTQ (Critical to Quality) metrics. Example: To launch a new version of product, seeking feedback on the existing product from focused group with sample questions like below might be helpful. 1. How did you know about the product? 2. When did you purchase/use the product last time? 3. What are the cons/lack of features you observed in the current version? 4. What are your expectation in new version? 5. Are you eagerly waiting for upgraded version?
December 28, 20232 yr Solution A focus group discussion is gathering people from similar backgrounds together to talk about a specific topic. It is a qualitative exploration where participants are asked questions about their perceptions, thoughts, opinions and ideas related to the specific topic. It comprises of 5 to 10 people. The group size varies depending upon the complexity of the topic. FGD is led by a facilitator who will introduce the topics for the discussion and encourages the group to participate in the discussion. But, there are some challenges in doing effective an FGD such as homogeneity of the group, dealing with dominant and disruptive people, avoiding group-thinking, time constraints, availability of the participants, facilitator bias, analyzing and reporting the results of the focus group. Despite the challenges, FGD is used in DMAIC projects to scope the project by gathering insights from stakeholders, to capture the customer requirements which helps to define the project goals, to identify and prioritize data sources which helps to focus on the most critical data for measurement, to analyze the root cause of an issue by engaging the team in a discussion, used to generate ideas for process improvement, also helps in developing control plans by engaging the stakeholders for defining monitoring and control measures for sustaining improvements.
December 29, 20232 yr Focused Group Discussion (FGD) is a type of qualitative research method in which generally a small group of about 5 to 10 people with different skillet or knowledge discuss a specific topic in a controlled conversation. A professional moderator facilitates the discussion to ensure its controlled so right insights and outcome is derived from the FGD. Some if the challenges with FGD is in challange to control the discussion in productive outcome oriented direction as it has tendancy to go wrong direction if dominant participants is too aggressive. It can also be difficult to find right participants as it can be time consuming. Another challange is measure the outcomes as it is mainly based on verbal insights or assumptions. FGD is mainly used as initial brainstorming sessions with relevant stakeholders in Define and Analysis phase of DMAIC. But it can also be used in other phases to extent a certain topic. It can also be used in Control phase to discuss outcome and gather feedback etc.
