Depend largely on what subjects you teach, what roles you have in the Institute and what future plans you have.

1.If you teach subjects that relate to operations or quality, you have lots of benefits through Six Sigma learning as it can make you more impressive and practical teacher who covers contemporary topics effectively.

2.If you have the roles of HOD or administration in the college, you can carry out some impressive improvements in the college by putting Six Sigma in action.

3.If you have a future plan of becoming an improvement catalyst either in education or in another industry, Six Sigma is the most impressive short duration career enhancing program.

Sir,    As a lecturer for HR and modern mgt. what type of project should I take?

First I am involving my self in discussions. In my opinion, as a HR person you can take Six Sigm project as

1. Improving competency of people.

2. Lead time reduction in recruitment.

3. Cost saving project like administrative charges.

Very good six sigma projects have been taken up in American Education Establishments. These include(but are not limited to)

• Reducing time for fee collection and administrative processes.
  
• Improving productivity in education support processes.
  
• Reducing lag in education delivery.
  
• Improving parent and student feedbacks
  
• Improving staff satisfaction and retention.
  
• Designing education delivery processes.
  
• Improving efficiency in canteen, parking and security related processes.
  
• Reducing administrative costs.
  
• Improving student engagement.
  
• Improving placement processes.
  
• Reducing time for admissions process.
  

Six sigma is about Fixing/ preventing Defects.

Most serious defects are Student Failures.

Less severe: students non conformances ( ethical issues, indisccipline etc)

Still lower ( To increase Motivation),,, day 2 day issues.

But most of the exercises here are challenging... being People issues.

BTW Vishwadeep do you have some demo presentations about the work American educationists as cited by you? If yes Can you help me ?

Six sigma quality strategy is more viable in an academic environment. You can note that the points (list of topics ) given by V.K is very crucial. For an educational institution various customers are there. Students, staff , employers, parents,society etc. First we have to catch the voice of them (VOC) ie their expectations from our institution. Then we must see, how far the existing systems in our institution fulfill their expectations. Find the gaps. Among them identify the most vitally dissatisfied and crucial area, that is most painful area. Do the needful so that your customer will be satisfied. In the same way proceed to other problems one by one. Definitely your institution will become quality and you will be much sought after.

Six Sigma training can surely help you in setting up great processes in your play school. Process focus can help enhance teaching and learning processes.

Now i want to do six sigma green belt certification. so how can i use this six sigma in my education industry? (or) can i change the industry from education to IT industry with the help of this six sigma? if the change is possible, How much time it will take to change?

Hi Ravi,

There is no need to go for Green Belt Certification as you have already been equipped with the concepts of Statistics in depth for last 9 years. You can directly go for Black Belt certification. You can apply Six Sigma in education sector also as Six Sigma is not any industry specific methodology. If you wish to change industry after Black Belt certification, it would not be a great problem for you.

Dear Ravi

I advise that you attend GB because the approach you have learnt and taught and the way six sigma uses statisitcs is not very similar.

I have seen many classical statisitics text books giving a different treatment to hypothesis testing or even the way sigma is calculated from DPMO. (Defects per million opportunities). secondly, you get an opportunity to do a project which I think is major benefit when you do a six sigma GB.

I advise you stay in education field for some more time as there are plenty of opportunities for applying six sigma in the course delivery and examination processes whcih are currently followed by colleges. Six sigma is about improvement and our colleges also do need improvement.

if you have a flair for IT then go ahead but if you have a flair for teaching, you are advised to take a call after you consult a few peoplein IT.

You can apply Six Sigma techniques in analysis and decision making on education industry. Although, I have seen professionals switching industries after Black Belt (even without completion of projects), generally it is good to complete a project in your current assignment before looking for a change. Let me know if you have further questions.

But teaching the statistics for the last 9 years is not practical oriented. It was just theory oriented and examination oriented teaching. I think direct black belt certification may be little bit tough for me.

Thank you for your suggestions. But i need one more suggestion from you. can you please suggest me the educational institutions where this six sigma is using? In generally the degree and pg colleges are not using any of the statistical softwares at all.

Part of the time, I am teaching MBA in Pune where the curriculum includes teaching statistical software under Business statistics and it is a 50 mark paper. I am not aware of any other college. However, I was of the opinion that your GB qualification can be used by your college in other ways like improvement of the course delivery , improving pass percentage of students or validating the changes in curriculum etc.

I agree with you. Six Sigma is not just statistics. It is recommended that you go through Green Belt certification first. In Benchmark Six Sigma Green Belt, there are so many elements like process thinking, Six Sigma philosophy, MSA, Sigma level assessments for different type of data, FMEA, etc which are not covered in statistical courses.

In our programs, even the coverage of topics like hypothesis testing is entirely practice oriented.

I am also statistics professor with more than three decades of service. Six sigma is a quality enhancement and sustenance methodology. In my opinion six sigma is easily understandable and more versatile. I did my "Green Belt" in ISI- New Delhi and "Black Belt" through Benchmark Six Sigma. Definitely these programs will give us the adequate

applications skills in the different environment both in industry and service sector which we rarely get in the class room teachings. Both colleges and CBSE schools are necessarily to go accreditation purpose in the future. You can be a quality consultant in your institution and also other institutions. You can also be considered for accrditor if you have such certifications.

I will agree with your opinion but here in these corporate colleges no management is willing to improve in improving the quality of their outcomes. We don't get any financial improvement while working in these corporate colleges. moreover batch by batch there is going to be more scrap in the student levels also.

So i want to change the industry from teaching to IT.

I am to Quality Management System in E-learning. We are developing a digital school for students to "Learn anywhere, anytime concept". Also, I am a Green belt certified person in Six sigma.

My question is - can we implement Six sigma methodology in E-learning. The process involves integration of human storyboard with technology. How can I measure the quality accuracy for this workflow for continual improvement. can any expert help me with this. Please advise if my request is not clear..

You can use Six Sigma techniques in setting up processes (DMADV) and also in improving processes that have been implemented (DMAIC).
