  1. Interesting Read!! Application of six Sigma in sports talks about Process Improvement, Defect Reduction and Bringing Perfection. Bringing perfection aspects into sports leads to the claim - "Six Sigma's applications have no boundaries''!!!!
  2. I think one may go for Continuous data instead of Discrete data in these cases. Continuous data can assume a range of numerical responses on a scale and it can be used to measure a wide range of different values which will lead to even the slightest defect being detected and measured. Can someone please suggest, if this can be the correct approach?
  3. As a novice to the field of Six Sigma, I would like to understand, if in lean six sigma project I have the option of collecting both continuous and attribute data, which one should I opt for ?
  4. To add on : If one thinks that Six Sigma won’t work for his/her company, he/she is either ignorant or refuse to change. Every business process can be measured, improved and controlled using the Six Sigma methodology. I believe that when people hear of the methodology called Six Sigma, they forget that every business runs because of processes, metrics, and leadership. How well they run depends on how efficient the processes are in meeting the customer requirements. How fast processes improve depends on a great deal on the methodology used to identify defects (using metrics), isolate the root causes, and eliminate causal factors. None of this gets done without leadership. There is nothing new about measuring, improving and controlling how well a processor performs. It works in manufacturing, sales, and almost every other domain. To conclude, It works anywhere you need to improve processes.
  5. Indeed a good example !! Just one thing to add on to the use of 80/20 rule: The 80/20 Rule, can serve as a daily reminder for us to focus 80 percent of our time and energy on the 20 percent of our work that is most important. Don't just "work smart", work smart and on the right things.
  6. Value Add activity is one : - for which Customer is ready to pay - Which transforms a product or a process - which is other than 7 wastes. As far as Inspection is considered , I will classify it as a Non Value add activity , as customer will not pay anything extra for it .
  7. Can we use Balance Score Card in finding six sigma project objectives and business case in define phase?
  8. Is Six Sigma methodology used only in a few organizations? It is important to remember that while companies like Motorola, GE, Bank of America, etc openly claim that they use Lean Six Sigma. There are thousands who use the same improvement techniques but do not name their improvement initiatives as Lean Six Sigma. If a management professional (in any industry or function) wants to bring improvement in a process, take data driven decision and improve problem-solving, the options available are limited to Lean Six Sigma methods. Hence, though some companies might not claim it openly, Lean Six sigma techniques are being used widely in a large number of organizations.
  9. Which one should we choose while counting defects and calculating sigma level of a project - DPM or PPM , can we take either of the two ??
  10. In FMEA , for RPN (Risk Priority number)'s threshold value, is there any industry thumb rule or best practice that can be used?
  11. Six Sigma is there to stay!! Because it is not just a methodology, it has become an integral part of all the processes in an organisation. You name an organisation, they might not be quoting Six Sigma directly as one of their areas, but indirectly they use it in one of following areas : Process improvement Data Driven Decision making or Problem Saving So, In my opinion, six sigma has always been there, as it fits well in almost all the functional areas.
