What are different belts in Six Sigma? What are the roles?
Originally, Six Sigma had 3 levels or belts based on the competence in understanding and applying statistical tools: 1. Green Belt Green belts are Six Sigma team leaders/members who receive generally a week long training in Six Sigma and elements of statistical methodology (DMAIC). They generally are trained to use the tools but training curriculum generally does not include advanced statistics. Green belts devote around 30% of their total time towards Six Sigma projects. They operate under the guidance of Black Belts and support them in achieving the overall results. 2. Black Belt Black belts are Six Sigma team leaders who receive four to six weeks of training focusing on Six Sigma and statistical methodologies. These are employees of an organization who apply100% of their time towards Six Sigma projects. Apart from advanced statistics, Black Belts also have a decent understanding of business management. 3. Master Black Belt MBB acts as in-house expert coach for the organization on Six Sigma. They devote 100% of their time to Six Sigma. They assist champions and guide Black Belts and Green Belts. Apart from the usual rigor of statistics, their time is spent on ensuring integrated deployment of Six Sigma across various functions and departments. Apart from these "original" belts, some organizations have also introduced new belts like the "white" and the "yellow" belts. These employees devote a very small portion of their overall time (less than 10%) towards Six Sigma initiative.
