Definition-
Personal excellence – (Strive to perform better then past time, every time) Personal excellence comes with experience to execute a particular process with minimum variation in execution, and results obtained are accurate and repeatable keeping the remaining process variables constant. As excellence is a comparative term, one should strive to perform better than what he/she does last time. It’s a continuous process of improvement. Whenever we start executing a new task, we may observe some variation that might not be there in subsequent execution. It’s purely individual perception to perform best every time, by working on self-motivation or for achieving the set goal and moreover when we work on the environment of excellence that created by us (as a continuous effort to perform best), always help in organization to achieve the process and operational excellence.
However many times it is observed that organizations do huge investment in taking the personal excellence of their employees from one level to next level, sometimes they succeed as well, as this attribute depends upon individual and their will to learn new things. We want to make a point here that there are people who are good in learning new things and thinking innovatively, at the same time there are people who are good at execution, they execute same thing every time without much variation. And organization needs both of these kind of people, but ratio matters. And many times organizations struggle to maintain that, and they have people to design the process but they do not have somebody who can execute the same and that leads to failure. So, personal excellence is very important for any organization, and not only in one domain but also in all the functions to execute the process in the same way with minimal variation.
Process Excellence (effective, efficient processes) - Process excellence is capability of any process to produce the desired outcome consistently with minimum variation within set criteria. It is the domain of Six Sigma and Lean.
Operational excellence process excellence plus some attention to HR, culture and systems thinking)- It builds on the concept of end-to-end process flows in core and support processes, including organization's culture (and with it HR) in its domain. when personal excellence and process excellence are achieved and company is able to achieve the set targets with minimum variation in desired outcome in batch to batch manufacturing and day to day operations, that leads to operational excellence , operational excellence can be achieved by company or a team within a company .
Businesses excellence ( the pragmatic pursuit and delivery of outstanding results for all stakeholders)- It encompasses the whole organization, including strategy, communication with all stakeholders, and – critically – the organization’s results. Business excellence is nothing but the Seamless execution of formulated Business strategy, which is capable of meeting the requirement of all stakeholders such as customers.
Discussion- In order to achieve the operational excellence, it is of utmost importance to achieve process excellence, and process excellence can be achieved by using different quality tools such as TQM, SIX SIGMA, however in order to use these tools effectively and understand the actual problem and there is need to achieve personal excellence . In many cases it happens that process is well set , but problem is with execution . There lacks the efficiency of identifying the problem effectively and many times it happens that solution proposed doesn’t gel with the problem and disaster happens. Thus we strongly believe that there needs some degree of personal excellence is required to execute the process effectively.
Well, we also have opinion that if personal excellence is in place and process has a gap, then also desired outcome can be obtained, but certainly to achieve operational excellence, it is must to achieve process excellence.
On several occasions, it is noted that poor business strategy executed effectively has also led to excellence. Here we want to make a point that business excellence can only be achieved or said to be achieved if all its stakeholders are satisfied, which is certainly a tough job , here personal excellence plays very important role. Which is to handle the situation effectively which may be business related or process related or any other created issues?
