  2. Q. 160 Hypothesis Testing - Business Success for any company depends on Continuous Improvement(CI) . CI requires creating hypothesis and testing them frequently. Most organizations create and test hypothesis (do trials for new ideas or carry on small experiments). For some reason, most professionals do not carry out statistical testing of hypothesis on sample data and tend to rely on gut feeling. It is seen that most Green Belt professionals do not use it while they have been trained on it. What are the key reasons for lack of use of this powerful family of statistical tests? 17. Six Sigma is a powerful methodology that can be used to improve business processes. It is a structured approach to problem-solving that can be applied to any process - manufacturing, sales, marketing, IT, BPO, accounting, purchasing, you name it. All processes have variation. Variation is the cause of all evil - it leads to defects and customer dissatisfaction. Six Sigma methodology can be used to reduce variation from any source and thus improve costs, quality, and hence customer satisfaction. The standard methodology that is used to improve existing processes is called DMAIC. The acronym DMAIC stands for Define - Measure - Analyze - Improve - Control. If you think about it - this methodology is common sense. Before we start working on a problem, we need to have a good definition of what is the problem, why we are working on it, where is the pain area, what is in the scope of the project etc. All of these are accomplished in the Define phase. Secondly, in the Measure phase, we are interested in ensuring that the data used for further analysis is free of measurement errors. Six Sigma is about making decisions based on facts & data. If the data is inaccurate, we would end up making the wrong decisions. Hence, the measured phase ensures good data. Before making any improvements, it is also important to establish a baseline so that we can clearly communicate the benefits obtained from our project to other key stakeholders. The next phase, Analyze, is all about making the hypothesis and using data to either prove or disprove our hypothesis. We make the hypothesis about what is causing the problem and then establish the real root causes. The fourth phase, Improve, focus on getting the best possible solution to solve the root cause of the problem. The solution is optimized and any potential failure modes are resolved before the solution is deployed in the real world. The last phase, Control, is all about ensuring that the solution is sustainable in the long run. Any financial benefits obtained from the project are also quantified. Finally, the improved process is transitioned over to the process owner. As we can see from this paragraph, any problem can be addressed using this structured approach. Here are some things that should come to your mind when people talk about Six Sigma: Business Process Improvement Methodology 3.4 defects per million opportunities Customer focused Uses facts & data Quantify financial benefits Structured improvement approach
  18. Q68. I have come across a few alternative names for DMAIC. One is G-E-T-S that was used by GE Transportation Systems and they used it as Gather- Evaluate- Transform- Sustain. 19. Hi VK, I thought of doing a Six sigma project on body weight lose. Now weight is 85kgs, as per the height and weight standard it should be within 50 to 60kgs. The target weight in 6 months is 55kgs with the diet plan and exercise plan. Calorie counts on diet and exercise are updated daily in log book. Now my question is what is the metric I have to consider? Shall I take calorie consumption per day and calorie expended per day. Note: the 85kg man should have average calorie consumption per day (accpd) should be 2300kcal for maintaining his weight. When the weight reduces the accpd also reduces to maintain weight. Now please guide me about what data I want to collect.
  20. Hi All, Need you advice... Currently I am working one of the business problem which is adversely impacting the client deliverable's. Problem is - High Attrition. I understand its a universal problem, I am just trying to control few of the factors which are in our control. Accordingly I have classified few of reasons for leaving into sub-groups, they are: 1) Career Growth 2) Compensation 3) Family Problem 4) Higher Position 5) Relocation 6) Health Problem 7) Higher Studies 8) Own Business 9) Performance Issue 10) Dissatisfied with Job 11) Working Hours 12) Job Location 13) Job Profile Also please see the Pareto attached. The data which I have collected have following information: Name Project Designations Grade Education Location (residential) Marital Status Date of Joining Last Day in the Org. Date of Resignation Notice Period Served Notice period Required What further analysis I can do with the above given data ?? Please advice. Regards, Rajiv Nair
  21. Hi, I've been given the responsibility to lead our organization's Inspection Cost Reduction Project. To give you some background, my employer is a passive telecom infra & services provider. While the telecom tower is being erected Civil & Tower Inspection should be done and this task has been outsourced to External Agencies specializing in Civil Foundation & Tower Inspection. The objective is to reduce this cost either by going for a sample inspection by external agency (currrently 100% of the sites are being inspected), or hiring permanent resources for 100% inspection or hiring permanent resource for sample inspection etc. Though the objective is clear the exact solution here is unknown however cause for high cost is known. Also, there might not be any scope of MSA as the data available is plain simple of inspection happening and the amount being paid for every inspection. My question to the gurus here is doing a project like this qualify as a BB project that can be undertaken with DMAIC approach.
  22. Hi All, Can any one remind me the difference between 8D and 6 Sigma methodologies besides the difference in use of statistical tools? Where do we apply 8D and where do we see a potential need of application of 6 Sigma? Cheers, Shree.
