It is not just about the theory here, but it is very important to know that how it can be applied. Everybody wants to increase the efficiency, reduce the defects, remove the non value adds.. And Six Sigma helps in achieving these.

Lean Six Sigma In Aviation
Wow ! A very nice read.. There have been many case studies on Southwest Airlines which are floating in various B school curriculum and competitions. The best takeaways for me are : 1. QFD philosophy 2. Understanding VOC 3. "Bags fly free" concept 4. Low turn around time. And many more. Indigo airlines works on the similar model and is the only profit making airline in the country

Six Sigma : Saviour In The Times Of Recession
During the recent recession, many businesses have been forced to close their doors due to the problems of the economy, which seemingly cannot be helped as the outlook continues to look worse. However, the Six Sigma method allows companies to identify their problems, analyze them, and establish a process for coordinating with the leaders of the company to see what can be done to improve upon them in order to make better products faster. The DMAIC process helps you to look into every area very critically and have the highest standards of processes and structures. This eliminates wastes and errors to the bare minimum, ensuring that even the bad market can not have an impact on the organization as every aspect was designed very critically to the highest level of perfection.

A very interesting video by Maria Bezaitis on The surprising need for strangeness. The video tells how can data be used for people's relations with other people and make digital relations. http://www.ted.com/talks/maria_bezaitis_the_surprising_need_for_strangeness.html My key takeaways : What can we do together which benefits all of us? If you do not talk to strangers, you will land up being with people Intervention of technology to enable the kind of people one needs at a point of time. Please pour in your thoughts on the same and see what "Other Strangers" have to say on this forum.

Brand Vs Quality
A very well framed scenario which I am sure that most of us face almost every time we need to buy anything. I think that the brands who have established themselves can be chosen confidently without thinking much. The brands that have established themselves can't afford to lower down the quality, reason being that word of mouth works both ways. If word of mouth marketing has made it a brand, it can also tarnish the image of the brand by bad publicity. All good brands know this fact and would not risk consumer satisfaction for a small amount of extra profit. The brands who have taken this risk are eroded away from the market.

Six Sigma Benefits To Educational Institutions
Institutes have a set procedure which is being followed since its inception and the changes have been bare minimum. This is not because of the incompetence as the administrative members and faculty is very well qualified. It is just that no one wants to get into a system which is running smoothly and initiate better processes. If Six Sigma is applied in the field of Admissions, it can make the process easier by removing the redundant steps (Non value adding but happen because they have always been happening). This will not only make it easier for the students to apply for admission but also reduce the colossal work load that the admissions team has to go through. Also, the previous year trends can be analyzed and it can help the college in giving out well calculated buffer list and minimize the confusion in the minds of students.

Six Sigma In Sales
Common perception that people have about Sales is that it just involves selling the product / service to the customers. Whereas, sales has a lot more to it. Regardless of whether a business uses a direct or indirect sales strategy, or a combination of the two, sales managers need to work with sales people on techniques. New customer acquisition and customer retention require two approaches. A sales strategy lays out the steps and methods necessary for customers in different stages. Potential customers need communication that introduces the brand and product or service in ways that show how it can solve his or her problems. Current customers require more personal communication about new features or benefits to keep them engaged. Promotions and referral discounts work to motivate current customers to spend their money and to spread the word to others. Right customer can be targeted in the right manner with the right offerings if the data is properly worked with and Six Sigma focuses on data driven decision making.

The Originators Vs. The Leaders
I think both have an equally important role to play. As mentioned above, that this is a question which has no definite answer as the debate is endless If Motorola did not introduce Six Sigma, the GE with all probabilities would not have had an opportunity to adopted it as a core philosophy. Whereas, it is GE who did the smart work and made Six Sigma as an essential methodology in process improvements and opened the flood gates for its application in almost all the domains. You can refer to the following link to see the application in various sectors : http://www.benchmarksixsigma.com/
