Six Sigma Targets In Manufacturing
Yes Pven San, It is good to start with 5S. 5S is the starting point for everything in TQM, gradually you can train people on other aspects of TQM. Please form a group for 5S implementation. Create checklists, do a n audit, create a competition, give awards, let all this be done by theemselves as groups. rotate the responsisbility to different people as leadres, it works. If you have aby questions pleas ask. I can guide you thru, How many people are there in your place? 5s is not only for shop floor reeember!!...Sripathy

Why All Organizations Don't Deploy Six Sigma ?
AS I had experienced it .. In SMEs organisations, it has to be driven by the top Choosing the organisation for training on 6S is also important. SMEs tend to choose individual consultants to save money(??). Many Individual consultants fail to train effectively, some train and don't implement! Most of the SMEs send people for orientation and that's it, show it as more training hours!!, they dont train up GBs, BBs, take up projects, The owners in the meanwhile think that people are trained, it will happen! No reviews from top,Middle management is missing or weak structure!! SMEs, they don't even maintain ISO forget ^S, No continuity in training, No training effectiveness process is present, benifit the ORG or the added perfomance of individual, has no measures.. Very pathetic to know these, I have experienced this coming from a Corporate culture joining the SME as a CEO,,Did contribute a lot to correct this also, the most difficult part is to convince the owners on the benefits. They only look for Tangible benefits most of the time and look for immediate benifits after training. The Hypotenuse in the bottom figure is not straight,it's convex, not able to see by the normal eye(@D Illusion), That has resulted in an extra box Sripathy

Six Sigma Targets In Manufacturing
Dear SJ, I had not seen this topic earlier. But very interesting aspect is brought out by you regarding specs and tolerances.I have observed this quite often in many drawings which come to us from the customers. Some times when we ask a specific clarification to the customer as to why it is so much etc on some dimensioning they are not able to clarify. As you rightly mentioned, the original designer will not be there and also the original thinking, approach and reasoning for the tolerances will not be known, therefore one has to go by history and caryy over the data version to version?? One more interesting thing happens in a ODM model, where design and manufacturing is outsourced. After Approval of the part by the customer, the outsourcing supplier does not give the exact/correct version of the drawing to the customer, with proper design dimension and tolerances..Till that time everything is fine..BUT .. when the next time when the customer goes in for a modification/up gradation of the design, using the drawings got from the earlier ODM, the customer is in trouble and the new outsourcing partner too??? Any comments??

Lean Six Sigma In Supply Chain
Dear Viswadeep, It is known fact that more tan 60% of the times our Q,C,Ds to our customers depend on the Q,C,Ds of our suppliers. When we have a "Q" problem, the first comment is "there is a problem in the part supplied??Same for "D" We are not able to deliver because of parts not available in Time??. Plenty of reasons and scope for Six sigma projects in this Area!! Cost projects should be initiated as joint projects with suppliers, instead of forcing them to reduce prices year on year. Sripathy

Process Capability And Sigma Level
Dear Sandeep, As mentioned by SJ, the Cpk is a short term capability and Ppk is the long erm capability.Fro simplicity you could create a small table where in Cpk=0.5=3 sigma and Cpk=1.5=6 sigma. In the table increase Cpk by 0.1 and increase Sigma by 0.3, from the base value of 0.5 and 3.0 correspondingly. If required you could also add ppm as 66810 at 3 sigma, down to 3.4 at 6 sigma. Sripathy
