  1. Dr P L Narasimhan India I happen to see the topic very late. I like to share my views in the discussion. The starting point for the NPD process is the customer. Ascertain whether your product meet the expectation of the customer and where your product is positioned with respect to the competitor. Study your resources and your core capability to meet the challenge. Then follow the DFSS methodology for the NPD process. The most important is to define the area of improvement . Find whether it can be done incrementally or as break through project. This depends on the time available to you and the position of the market share of your product. Form a team and narrow down the problem. Identify with select core team members as to the alternatives and solutions and fix the specification of the product to be produced. Follow the path of DFSS. DFSS only tells the methodology and gives the tools and it is up to the team to bring the best alternative in a shortest cycle time. narasimhan
  2. Dr.P.L.Narasimhan Textile Industry has a great potential for applying Six Sigma. Unknown problems, chronic defect areas etc can be identified and real improvement can be made. Advisable to take one area for study and implement. One more area of significance is the area of power saving which is critical to Textile Industry. Textile Industry includes spinning where a lot of saving could be achieved in material. narasimhan
  3. Dr.P.L.Narasimhan I agree with the author that all process cannot be controlled with in 3.4 defects. The significant factors are identification of critical proceseses and controlling the process variation within close limit by process capababilty study and controlling random factors. The design specifications also should be wider than the procees control limits. Since the tolerance act in cumulative way, wherever possible control the critical tolerances from datum. As the author indicated tolerance should not be given as a routine procedure as it increases the cost of manufacturing. narasimhan
