Design as a process is described in particular, an “Action-Centric Model”:
“The Action-Centric Perspective is a label given to a collection of interrelated concepts… It posits that:
Designers use creativity and emotion to generate design, the design process is improvised.
No universal sequence of stages is apparent – analysis, design and implementation are contemporary and inextricably linked”
Lean Six Sigma clearly stimulates creativity. However, it is not the best method for identifying ideas for breakthrough innovation. Lean Six Sigma synergizes designing process through DMADV approach. It gives a structured approach for robust designing through DMADV. Lean six sigma methodology considers all aspects of process / product failure and hence it helps in delivering a process with robust outcome. In the absence of structured approach supported by lean six sigma designed process is likely to have loop holes and with disruptive technologies could lead to blunders.
Ford Pinto is the classic example here; model was beautifully designed with none of a kind features like front engine, rear drive, and stunning outlook. This model over period of time not only failed in market but also caused multiple million dollars penalty to Ford along with defamation of the company and reason was: Creative designing without adopting the structured design methodology like lean six sigma.
Designing in sense of artwork and aesthetics may not require support of lean six sigma. Bitter truth is art has nothing to do with process or functionality and eventually no risk involved.
