A cause may be necessary but not sufficient for a problem to occur. If a problem has to happen, then this cause would have been mandatorily be present. This cause should be treated as a critical cause and steps should be taken to avoid/minimise such cause. A cause may be sufficient but not necessary for a problem to happen. This cause could be sufficient for the outcome to occur, however its not always necessary that it would have an impact on the outcome. There could be several other causes which could have similar or higher impact on the outcome. Such causes should be kept of the watch list and should be kept within the control limits. A cause may be neither sufficient nor necessary for a problem to occur. Since this cause is neither critical nor necessary, much importance need not be given to this cause as its presence would not have any impact on the outcome. A cause may be both sufficient and necessary for a problem to occur. This cause would have the most direct and severe impact on the outcome. If this cause happens, then the problem is borne to occur. This cause should be considered as a critical cause and actions have to be taken to avoid such cause.

Operational Excellence is related to management of group of individuals towards achieving a single goal (eg: operating a refinery). Business Excellence is related to management of group of individuals, equipments, facilities, capital, time towards achieving business goals.
