How is Six Sigma different from other project managment guidelines namely, ITIL, PMP and Prince 2 ? Kindly advice

The Question has really an immense power to generate thought provoking ideas.

• How is Six Sigma Different?
• What is the uniqueness of the Methodology adopted?

 

Here I would like to elucidate the base or framework for Six Sigma and how it is different. Six Sigma primarily is the structured application of Statistical tools in an already set road map to achieve desired results. However, in Project Management principles we can use different methodology or tools apart from statistics and it involves resource management, time management as well.

 

For example - Let say we need to set up a Shared Service Center (SSC) for one company or outsource an entire business process from overseas location to feasible location. Here we need to think of project.Program point of view and six sigma is just a principle applies here. We need to design processes, understand already existing processes, deep dive in the process to study details, map people work, create SLA, Reverse SLAs that does not come under the purview of six sigma alone.

 

No Doubt Six Sigma is useful in designing existing product, or creating error free product or process and give breakthrough results in the project management.

However, it should be kept in mind that Project Management & Six Sigma are complementary to each other and not the substitute

ITIL, PMP and Prince etc. are the standard guidelines to follow a fixed methodology and might not be associated with financial returns visibly.

Six Sigma, on the other hand, is a flexible manner of identifying a problem, collecting relevant data, setting a fixed goal of achievement, analyzing data with the help of statistical tools to reach to that goal.

 

It does not matter what tools you adopt and how you move towards your goals, but problem identification, data collection, proper analysis, the setting of target results, fixing time to reach to that results and then finally achieving those goals is prime.
