Vishwadeep Khatri interviewed Gautam Kumar, who has undergone Green Belt and Black Belt training from Benchmark Six Sigma.
BSS : Gautam Kumar, can you share with us details of your career journey till now?
Gautam Kumar: I am an Engineer and MBA. I did my Green Belt when I had only two years experience. I have worked with Oracle and CISCO. I started with the profile of IT Analyst and graduated to Project Manager. We are cureently developing an analytic COE (center of excellence) at CISCO.
BSS : Two questions - What were your green belt projects? In this industry data reliability is a challenge many times. Have you addressed this issue to some extent?
Gautam Kumar: My profile has been managing critical incidents in CISCO environment. We had to gather primary data. Data from secondary sources was not very reliable. My Green Belt Project was on critical incidents. We found some critical areas, one was improvements required in paging global engineers, another was a tool development which have resulted in improvements in incident management.
BSS: How has Six Sigma impacted your professional life?
Gautam Kumar: There is an exciting Black Belt project that we carried out recently. We worked on a project on Virtual Office. 99% availability was recorded in various countries (data, voice and video), but in India it was only 10%. How to improve quality of service delivered through this product. 12 teams globally participated in the project. Finally it was found that power fluctuation in India is affecting the performance. As solutions, UPS was made mandatory, IOS was changed and modified. It took 12-14 months. We have now achieved reliability of 95% in India now.
This product shall be launched soon in India. We are not tying up with providers unless they meet certain requirements.
BSS : You have undergone Green Belt and Black Belt training from Benchmark. How was your experience?
Gautam Kumar: In terms of training quality, content and methodology, it was very good. The scope of understanding was widened. It was a great package. I have recommended colleagues to attend these programs.
BSS:- What career direction do you see for yourself in the coming period?
Gautam Kumar: As I get more experience and knowledge, a COE is going to be established in US. I think a lot of value shall be added here. I can visualize the roadmap to a destination of Director in about five years time.
BSS:- What are your views about industry specific subgroups in our forums? Some people have been supporting them while others do not like the idea.
Gautam Kumar: I think we must have industry specific subgroups. Let us say I am looking for something for IT services, I shall be able to have direct contact with industry specific people.
BSS:- Do you have any suggestions?
Gautam Kumar: I think good practices sharing shall be a very nice thing that can be started. People shall be able to share practices without revealing data.
BSS:- Thank you for your time and suggestions, Gautam Kumar and best wishes for your career journey.
