How to determine the warranty period for any product or service, examples are good?

Warranty period should be calculated through two elements.

• The expected life and reliability of the product or service
  
• Competitive pressures and advantages of offering a longer period.
  

While the first factor should be the real decider, the second plays its own role in many cases.
