Most & 6 Sigma

Featured Replies

Has any body used MOST MOPS as measure for 6 sigma projects? It is a very good measure for any industry.

I am not aware, Please elaborate more on this

MOST is maynard operation sequencing technique. In this method of capturing data for any process activity, we can measure the time required in a very discriptive and activity level timings. Which will help in determining the MOP for machine/man.

How this could be helping in IT and related areas?

Can this be used to measure any activity..? By the way what is MOP?

MOP is measurement of performance. It can help you in budgeting your manpower and also time lines for projects in any sector (IT, Manufacturing, Hospitality, Infrastructure etc.)

The technique will have pre determined list of timings for all types of activities includes reading writing etc. Hence it can be used in every industry.

Thanks Madhav!!

Can MOP be compared to Earned value? We have Delivery metrics like Schedule and effort which are used to compute the earned value. Earned value is also a measure of performance..

Yes we can give a value to the MOP and measured in terms of value

can u give any example of MOst.

Example:

A grinding machine operation requires 1 Hr to process a part to the required finish and dimensions. The machine is CNC. In this one hour there are various activities like loading, unloading, inspection, and toll contact time etc. The activity done by the operator like loading, unloading & inspection may take only 4 to 5 minutes. online and offline 2 minutes. The tool contact time may be 55 minutes.

SO the utilization of machine is for 1 hr. But the man utilization is for only 5 to 7 minutes. The breakup of activities with pre determined activity timings will identify to make use of the resources like man and machine. We can make use of the man elsewhere for this 53 minutes.

Thats excellent, I am sure this will help.. I sometimes wonder We guys practicing Six Sigma ensure that a Man is turned into a machine... lol

I understand MOST is the software used for time and motion study to improve the productivity. How Six Sigma will be helpfull ?

I agree with Prabhu that it doesnt give any meaning to apply six sigma for all application.....

Well, Prabhu and Cyril, to clear the air a bit, Six Sigma universe of knowledge is collection of different statistical tools under the DMAIC process flow. Having understood this, now let us appreciate that MOST and PMTS etc. existed even much before Six Sigma came into being, as process flow charting, and time measurement techniques and mainly that's what we do under 'Lean' (to identify and eliminate NVAs and/ or combine set of activities in order to improve system efficiency and hence effectiveness). Thus the techniques are not away from Six Sigma fraternity. The only observation one need to make is in choice of tools under each process stage. Right selection of tool to measure and analyse right set of data to get the desired result!! There lies the crux and expertise of practitioner of Six Sigma.

Thus, man is not turned into machine, but at the same time the tool identifies gaps for resource optimisation. Hope the team will tend to see the merit of such use of tools in the light of above submission.

Yes MOST is a technique to optimise your resoucrce utilization(man & machine). Apply six sigma methodology use MOST as a measure.
