Dear Friends, At my work place we want to work on a project titled "Improvement of Environmental Education & Awareness among employees". The issue is that there is a reservation at some quarter with respect to the Six Sigma methodology application for this particular area. This is not considered appropriate on the ground that solution is obvious as we have to impart training to make people aware. On the other hand those who consider this approach in right direction come out with the argument that it may identify which particular group of employees is at slippery wicket and which one is at strong footing. Few nonstatistical tools may be used to identify the real reasons for such a state of affair. The group which is better off may be utilized to spread this knowledge and awareness. Your input interm of its endorsement or other wise will help us to take a right decision. Please share your views telling whether this a right project through six sigma road map. Regard Kanwal

Dear Srinivas, Your modesty is really very much appreciable. You have very nicely explained the whole issue. Thanks a lot. One thing with which i find difficulty to get convinced is your saying "If the unit cost of production at this stage is more than that of unit cost at step 2, then it is better to dispose off waste as scrap rather than reprocess or rework" To my mind whether one should reprocess or not, depends on revenue generation ability of the item concerned. If it can fetch more than what one is spending against reprocessing then logically, decision needs to be in favour of reprocessing. Pl. respond whether i am right in my thought process or there is need for me to correct it. Once again thanks & regards. K P Kapoor

Dear Sekhar, This needs to be viewed from different perspective. Ignorance may not be the excuse. There may be two ways of learning one is learning by committing mistakes and getting experienced. Other one is smart way of learning whereby we learn by experience of the others, particularly when those who are ready to share the experience are master in their on field. So when some one like Azim Premji recommends Six Sigma, we must believe it because he is not promoting six sigma against some consideration as SRK or Big B are doing when they are promoting a product. So,where people are not aware of the potential benefits of six sigma no question of getting it implemented in these organizations. Second is the case where as you are telling people leading the organization are aware of the six sigma concepts. Here the issues are different as we don't want to work in a structured manner, we believe in firefighting and then complain that who has time for these initiatives as if this is an extra job which will increase their work load. At times it so happens that we don't want to come out of our comfort zone and expect that improvements in our processes will be made available in a platter. This may not be possible. There is need of adaptation of initiatives like six sigma in true spirits with relentless efforts, sincere dedication, and disciplined approach. When you ask six months experienced individual to go far root cause analysis of some problem along with his peer group changes of value added input will be remote. Hope you might have been convinced for the reasons why initiatives like this are not mandatory. Regards. K P Kapoor

Dear Friends, I will feel obliged if some of you may provide some input as to how i may proceed to track down the cost of poor quality at my work place. I am working at one of the biggest locations producing Zinc & Lead Metals. Though some vague ideas are there like to work out COPQ one has to identify the cost of reprocessing, redoing, rechecking or recycling etc. I am in fact looking for a structured approach whereby these elements may be captured in a simplified manner. If some of you might have done some project in this regard Pl share it. Regards K P Kapoor
