Vishwadeep Khatri from Benchmark Six Sigma recently interviewed Debasis Pati who is an Assistant Manager at Bank Of America to find out how Six Sigma training has been shaping his career.
BSS : Debasis, can you share with us details of your career journey?
Debasis Pati: The journey has been quite satisfactory. I have worked with HSBC, IBM, TCS and Bank of America in the same order. While at HSBC, I worked towards SEI CMM Level 3 for China operations, and at Bank of America, I have had a role to play in CMMI Level 5 achievement. On Six Sigma front, I have completed one Black Belt and two Green Belt projects.
BSS: You have undergone Black Belt training from Benchmark. How was your experience?
Debasis Pati:- I have undergone both Green Belt and Black Belt programs from Benchmark. I would sum up the experience in three points
1. Value for money
2. Very good clarity
3. Direct Application oriented training.
BSS: What kind of Six Sigma projects have you been working on?
Debasis Pati:- All my projects have been in IT domain. I have worked on two Green Belt projects where there was direct benefits in term of FTE reduction. Similarly the Black Belt project that I did was focused on service requests which were 9000 in number in the beginning of the project. We achieved reduced count of service requests, reduction in TAT.
BSS: Which Six Sigma tools have you applied more often?
Debasis Pati:- We are using most of the tools covered in Benchmark training. I have been making use of MSA, hypothesis testing, regression, FMEA, cause and effect matrix, poka yoke more frequently.
BSS: What kind of benefits have you derived due to Six Sigma knowledge?
Debasis Pati:- I can say that Six Sigma knowledge has been instrumental in my career growth. It has been a differentiator that has led me to important roles which I would have missed otherwise.
BSS: How has your job profile been impacted by Six Sigma expertise?
Debasis Pati:- As I mentioned, ability to use statistical techniques has provided me opportunities in management system improvement related initiatives. I am currently mentoring projects and providing Six Sigma training on basics to several team members.
BSS:- What career direction do you see for yourself in the coming period?
Debasis Pati:- Six Sigma being a way of life already, I can visualise myself growing well. With professional networking and experience sharing, we can all even faster.
To add to this, I am willing to share my learning and experience of 10 years. I strongly feel that it is good to introduce Six Sigma philosophy early among students. It is nice to know that Benchmark has already initiated such programs.
BSS: Do you have any improvement suggestion for Benchmark Six Sigma?
Debasis Pati:- It would be great if Benchmark can organise regional networking meetings among past participants. We should meet periodically to share Six Sigma experiences. I understand that the web based network is a good platform but city specific personal interactions should be the next step forward for Benchmark.
BSS: Thank you for your time and willingness to share your experience with the Six Sigma community.
