Americans vs French - The Big Difference

From 1995 till 2007 - About 50,000 US citizens died due to want of a suitable organ donor.

An interesting statistic - Only 28% Americans have chosen to donate their organs while 99.9% of French citizens are potential donors.

What is the reason for this striking difference? Let us explore one by one.

  • Awareness? - This cannot be the reason as large number of campaigns have been carried out in USA.
  • Moral development? - Do Americans believe that Doctors may not work as hard to save life of patients who have agreed to donate organs? This cannot be the reason. Evidence - Germans and Austrians share the same language, culture and are neighbors but have huge difference on this issue - 12% Germans are donors while 99.9% of Austrians are donors.

Something more important is at work behind all this - something more important than deliberate reasoning, national thought processes, or individual preferences.

If you want to make your best guess, stop here and think. Scroll down to know the real reason.

Hold your breath - Read on!

The reason is - In the US, Great Britain and Germany, the legal default is that nobody is a donor without registering to be one. While in France, Austria, Hungary, everyone is a potential donor unless they opt out. This means the DEFAULT RULE works in different parts of the world on this important subject. This is the same as Opt-In versus Opt-Out rule in a software program.

As you see a single rule like this can have serious long standing repercussions. Have you tried working with the default rule in organisational processes? If you think hard, the rule does work in many processes. Please feel free to comment and share this article.

Everyone at some point or the other would have been irritated by unsolicited sales calls or bombarded with SMSs regarding services / products.

In India we have a National DND (Do Not Disturb) list to which one can 'Opt in'.

Recently the government was toying with the idea of having a 'Opt Out' option here wherein people who genuinely want to get the messages / calls shall register. The idea was that not many people knew of the DND service especially in remote areas.

Later on it was rejected and the 'Opt in' option was retained because of the adverse implication it would have on the ITeS Industry. The Outbound Call Center relies heavily on the database to call out and a option like this would severely impact their operations and corresponding leads.

If any one is interested to opt in - Just SMS 'START DND' and send it to 1909.

This has saved at least 15-20 minutes of my productive time daily in deleting these SMS or answer calls. This also reduces unnecessary interruptions in the thought process when we are busy with our tasks (Know Nuisance Factor).

I agree that if there is rule that all dead bodies belong to the Nation and therefore there organs can be used for the purpose of organ donation, many people can be saved.  But, only if we also develop enough hospital infrastructure for tertiary care.

Our problem is that even if an accident victim is brought to the hospital (private) in time, we send them to the Government Hospital knowing fully well it is Death Sentence for the victim to do so.  We have to radically change our way of thinking.  We always try to find an excuse for not doing something (usually in others) rather than to find an excuse to do it.

In India we have Opt-In process. You may choose to be a donor. Would like to comment on Mr. Arvind's statement that "we send them to the Government Hospital knowing fully well it is Death Sentence for the victim to do so".  I would like to inform everyone that we have a legislation which states "no Hospital (Private or public entity) should deny First Aid, Resuscitation in case of life thretening situation. If one receives the patient they should give proper treatment / resuscitate to save life and ask for further consent to the family. They should not deny this first step at any cost. Its a social obligation of every Hospital being in India.

Friends please spread this word to everyone so that they may be helping hand in saving a life.

Also I would like to support the statement of Mr. Arving on his point that "We have to radically change our way of thinking". Yes we need to support and motivate friends and family to opt for organ donation.
