Q1: What is Master Black Belt?

Master Black Belt (MBB) is a management qualification for strategically leading continuous improvement in an organization while working closely with leadership. An MBB’s biggest skill is to pick and execute suitable methods for a short-term or a long-term business challenge.

A Business Excellence Master Black Belt has ability to utilize advanced Lean methods, model building & simulation, creativity approaches, theory of constraints, and comparison methods. In addition, an MBB needs to know how technology approaches in Business Analytics and Robotic Process Automation can be put to good use for business results.

Q2: What is required for Master Black Belt certification?

Master Black Belt requires completion of 8 certifications in addition to Black Belt Certification. These eight certifications are Lean Practitioner, Lean Guide, Business Modelling Expert, Business Value Analyst, Creativity and Innovation Practitioner, AHP Practitioner, RPA Foundation and Business Analytics Foundation.

While these 9 certifications (including Black Belt) can be pursued at different times, completion of all leads to MBB qualification.

A Master Black Belt should be willing to lead problem solving in a Strategic Business Unit of an organization.

Q3: How long does it take to get a Business Excellence Master Black Belt?

A Master Black Belt qualification will require about 6-8 weeks if Black Belt certification is already completed.

While completing classes and practice sessions takes only weeks, building thorough competence will take months or years of practice. A Master Black Belt needs to work closely with leadership team to be able to apply his learning and hone his skills further. For quick results, it is best for a company to partner with an expert external consultant to build this competence with application orientation.

    • Business Excellence Master Black Belt moves beyond Six Sigma to integrate contemporary competencies.
    • This program consists of 8 certifications namely Lean Practitioner, Lean Guide, Business Modelling Expert, Creativity and Innovation (TRIZ) Practitioner, Business Value Analytics, Business Analytics Foundation, Strategic RPA Practitioner, and AHP Practitioner.
    • The program focuses on 5X value creation in one-fifth of the time when compared by Lean Six Sigma Black Belts.

It was good training. I really liked the following aspects-

Creativity and Innovation- The realization that TRIZ can be used for almost all industries.

BVA- Capability of having meaningful communication with leadership and getting your point across in the most effective way.

AHP- I always considered that selecting an option from a list can never be made scientific and will always be based on individual intuition. AHP has brought in some science to this belief.

It was a great program. Each competency was highly useful-

Creativity and Innovation – I learnt scientific ways of finding creative solutions to the problems through TRIZ matrix.

AHP – Multiple paired comparison that allows you to compare apples and oranges and to derive at a decision. This is much better than pugh-matrix and enables better decision making.

TOC – How to look at organization wide constraints and prioritize areas to improve upon. TOC allows operations to speak financial language and gain confidence of top level management and support for projects. Most importantly, it is a tool through which we can demonstrate impact of projects on 3 important financial metrics.
