Q1: What is Master Black Belt?

Master Black Belt (MBB) is a management qualification for strategically leading continuous improvement in an organization while working closely with leadership. An MBB’s biggest skill is to pick and execute suitable methods for a short-term or a long-term business challenge.

A Business Excellence Master Black Belt has ability to utilize advanced Lean methods, model building & simulation, creativity approaches, theory of constraints, and comparison methods. In addition, an MBB needs to know how technology approaches in Business Analytics and Robotic Process Automation can be put to good use for business results.

Q2: What is required for Master Black Belt certification?

Master Black Belt requires completion of 8 certifications in addition to Black Belt Certification. These eight certifications are Lean Practitioner, Lean Guide, Business Modelling Expert, Business Value Analyst, Creativity and Innovation Practitioner, AHP Practitioner, RPA Foundation and Business Analytics Foundation.

While these 9 certifications (including Black Belt) can be pursued at different times, completion of all leads to MBB qualification.

A Master Black Belt should be willing to lead problem solving in a Strategic Business Unit of an organization.

Q3: How long does it take to get a Business Excellence Master Black Belt?

A Master Black Belt qualification will require about 6-8 weeks if Black Belt certification is already completed.

While completing classes and practice sessions takes only weeks, building thorough competence will take months or years of practice. A Master Black Belt needs to work closely with leadership team to be able to apply his learning and hone his skills further. For quick results, it is best for a company to partner with an expert external consultant to build this competence with application orientation.

    • Business Excellence Master Black Belt moves beyond Six Sigma to integrate contemporary competencies.
    • This program consists of 8 certifications namely Lean Practitioner, Lean Guide, Business Modelling Expert, Creativity and Innovation (TRIZ) Practitioner, Business Value Analytics, Business Analytics Foundation, Strategic RPA Practitioner, and AHP Practitioner.
    • The program focuses on 5X value creation in one-fifth of the time when compared by Lean Six Sigma Black Belts.

For Lean (MBB Competency), my expectation was as follows –

By the end of the training, I should know to calculate or derive below things:

1. FTE required for my process.

2. Cycle time of  my process.

3. TAKT time of my process.

4. To identify and eliminate wastes.

5. To detect root cause efficiently through RCA.

Everything was explained to me very well and now I am able to apply all the above in my process.

Creativity & Innovation techniques were fantastic, content coverage was also excellent. In AHP module, exercise simulation was good. In BVA module, the TOC theory & content was enlightening.
