What is Six Sigma, DMAIC Methodology?

Recommended Posts

Guest VB Manian

Hi Renjith,

An Organisation being ISO-QMS/COPC, etc, certified would be having its own way of process/business functions in accordance with the norms laid down by the certifying body (as above). However, acquiring these certifications do not ensure business success / profitability, & are usually an outcome of customer & market expectations, & an endeavour by the certified organization to show its commitment towards the same. Such certified organizations can further move up the growth ladder by use of Six Sigma methodology, which directly links the business improvement efforts (achieved through Six Sigma) with business success & emphasis on continual improvement.

Six Sigma vs. Other (ISO/COPC) certification programs:

  • While various certifications lay down the norms & guidelines for adherence, & verify compliance with them for certification & continuing requirements, Six Sigma approach & methodology provides the requirements for success as well as its path/roadmap.
  • The various certification approaches help an organization in achieving a performance level of 3 & 4 sigma, whereas sigma levels up to & beyond 6 are achievable using the Six Sigma methodology.
  • While other certifications are aimed at building internal & external (customer & market) confidence, Six Sigma is aimed at building business success & customer satisfaction.

In addition to the above, there are other points also. However, the objective of drawing a comparison between Other Certifications & Six Sigma is not to show which is better or superiority/one-upmanship between the two, but to convey the point that deployment of Six Sigma in any Process/Business/Organisation improves its functionality (in terms of yield/productivity/performance, quality, defect reduction, customer satisfaction, & continual improvement) many times over, leading to never seen before (business) results & consequent success, in addition to the various achievements to its (Process/Business/Organization) credit vouched for by the other (ISO, COPC, etc) certification (s) acquired.

Hope this helps in addition to the two posts by the previous respondents.

Thanks & regards,

Dear Mr. Chandrashekhar,

You dont have distance learning programs for professional disciplines like Lean, Six Sigma, etc, but you do have online programs. However, these are not effective for everyone especially when one is new to these concepts. Even otherwise also, the concept of e-learning is still at a nascent stage in India, though there are many institutions offering different online programs/courses for learning. Moreover in an online program, face to face interaction with the trainer is missing & thus personal touch is lacking apart from lack of scope for professional network development, lethargy in learning due to convenience of time, etc, which may not make the learning vey fruitful. Besides joining a class room type of training session for learning these (SS, Lean, etc) will not take more than a week of training. So, the same should not be a problem.

The object of mentioning the above is not to decry or vouch for any particular method/style of training but to try & help in making the right choice to get the best value for your time, effort & money invested in learning.

Hope this helps.

Regards & Best Wishes,

Dear Vishwadeep,

I have retired University professor with sufficient knowledge of statistics. Being a professor of Botany at University since 1974 till 2009, I was teaching statistics and authored 2 books on Biostatistics. It is my long lasting desire to apply the knowledge of six sigma to biological data and to complete a short term ( online ) course. will it be possible to guide me in this respect?

Thanks

Dear Mr. Mungikar,

The methodologies of Six Sigma can be applied to al sort of Data including Biostatistics (whether they are continuous or discreet). Using Six Sigma techniques, you may do more much than trend analysis. You could study deviation, limits and efficiency of various processes, both organic and artificial.

About the course, allow me to inform you that the first step towards Six Sigma learning is a Six Sigma Green Belt Training. It is a four day course conducted across 10 cities round the year by Benchmark Six Sigma. I must tell you that while an online course might give you conceptual knowledge, it will keep you from developing real insights. Plus, during your 4 day Green Belt training you can discuss - with our trainers - various avenues to deploy these techniques into biostatistics. For more information on Green Belt training and timings, kindly call at the toll free number:

Please feel free to contact me here in case of further questions.

Warm regards

Hi Karishma,

Please be informed that you can very well undergo a Six Sigma Training and Certification Program along with learning Stats or Math. Six Sigma being an extremely powerful methodology used for Process Improvement and Quality Control comprises of various statistical tools and techniques and is not only beneficial for management graduates but is widely used by individuals from various educational and professional backgrounds. We have had Engineering students at Chennai doing Six Sigma Black Belt and procuring Six Sigma jobs as fresh BE's.

To start with the subject, you need to begin with a four days Green Belt Program, after which you can move up to six days Black Belt and then finally a 5 days Master Black Belt Program.

For more details about each, please contact us on our Toll-Free number 1800 102 3003 or write us at https://www.benchmarksixsigma.com/contact-us/

Shradha

MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS IN IMPLEMENTING SIX SIGMA PROJECTS:-

The most important aspects of implementing a six sigma project are to identify Key Business Processes and sub - level processes and define the problem first, before taking any measures. The Define Stage should pass the SMART Gate (Specific, Measurable, Attainable yet Aggressive, Relevant and Time Bound). If one is not able to define the Problem Accurately nothing can be further done. Also, the Top Management Commitment is most important if one is working with the Top - Down Approach. One can also work with the Bottom - Up Approach implementing the key projects and let the management know the real gains. Right Projects, Right People with the choice of Good Black Belts and Green Belts, Right Tools and the Right Road - Map are the key aspects to a great success in six sigma projects. Six Sigma is basically 80% people and 20% tools.

  • Six Sigma is a rigorous, relentless and ruthless pursuit of variance reduction.
  • Six Sigma is a Break through Management Strategy - "In Pursuit of Excellence" - giving High Financial Impact to the organization at the same time aligned with the Business Strategy of the company.
  • Six Sigma is a way of running a business and a way of life making fewer mistakes in life and in what we do.
  • Six Sigma is a Quality Philosophy in which we deliver world class products having approximately zero defects in the products or services.
  • Six Sigma is a Key Business Strategy that results in an overall cultural change which leads to employee empowerment using a Proactive approach shredding off the Reactive Approach.
  • Six Sigma is of great help in improving quality and productivity thereby reducing - wastes, downtimes, cycle times, rejects, defects, scrap and rework.
  • Six Sigma is a structured problem-solving approach that uses process approach believing all work processes.
  • Six Sigma is a broad business approach that has a data driven fact based method of driving all defects into parts per million of opportunities giving a high financial impact to the organization (Manufacturing or Service) at the same time aligned with the business strategy of the company.
  • Six Sigma is a Breakthrough Management Strategy and is of great help in improving quality, productivity, reducing - Wastes, Downtimes, Cycle time, Rejects, Defects, Scrap and Rework. It results in bottom line impact and high financial impact to the organization, giving an overall impetus to the net profits after tax. It is a Key Business Strategy that results in an overall cultural change which leads to employee empowerment with a proactive approach shredding off the Reactive Approach.

My favorite benefits of Six Sigma are:

  • Delivering world-class products.
  • Proactive, not a reactive approach.
  • Teamwork support and growth.
  • Structured Problem solving with high business financial impact.
  • Good supplier and customer relationship.
  • Competitive advantage.
  • Delighted customers.

IMPORTANCE OF SIX SIGMA: - Six Sigma Deployment is for the economic growth of industry because a better economy makes the world a better place to live.

Hello Vishwadeep,

As a fresh graduate out of college and looking for jobs into the field of data analytics/business analytics. I would like to know what added advantage I can gain after getting the Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. As the course content gave me some hints of the similarity with  data/business analytics and six sigma.

Bibek

Hi Bibek,

You have made a good observation there.

Lean Six Sigma helps you connect Business Analytics with a methodology for Business Problem Solving. The tools for descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics coupled with several other best in class management techniques that have process focus and project-driven outlook. The Green Belt will bring in the sequence that starts from a business case and well-defined problem till resolution of the problem with sustained results.
