What is Research but a blind date with knowledge? - William Henry (1775-1836)
Vernon Cooper: “These days people seek knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future.”

While doing research, if you put these two thoughts together - you would not like to stop at gaining knowledge but to gain wisdom for future inferences and decision making.

Research often uses DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom)
In general, a research intends to make use of historical or experimental data, convert it to information, (and in some cases) translate it further into knowledge and finally make it to work as organizational wisdom.
Here is the DIKW model from wiki
Data Information Knowledge Wisdom

Data (facts), information, knowledge and wisdom

There are many things that can go wrong when people mix up DIKW with each other or make errors in progressing from one to another. Some of these are listed below.

- Facts when captured and elaborated become information. Information is captured about data at a given point in time. Data keeps changing but we may not have mechanism to capture the latest information.

- Conversion of data into information and knowledge is plagued by several issues like selective observation, inaccurate observation, over generalization, made-up information, ex post facto hypothesizing.

- The most complex part is moving from knowledge to wisdom. There is a big possibility that people get into the errors like illogical reasoning, ego involvement in understanding, premature closure and mystification

Research and Lean Six Sigma

Research is sometimes categorized as exploratory (identifying or defining a problem), constructive (tests theories and proposes solutions), or empirical (tests feasibility of solution using empirical evidence). Lean Six Sigma techniques focus on all the three types of research.

Caution – While Lean Six Sigma learning does provide scientific approaches to work with data, information, knowledge and wisdom parts of DIKW model, there may still be the several errors in a structured Lean Six Sigma project. The objective is to minimize errors sufficiently in a manner that makes business sense.
